CRYSTAL LAKE A month after its original conference was canceled, the Illinois Minuteman Project has found a place to hold its anti-illegal immigration seminar.
The groups seminar, featuring an Ohio sheriff known for his tough stance on illegal immigration, will be held from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Oct. 26 at McHenry County College.
Dave Gorak of NumbersUSA, which supports immigration restrictions, also is scheduled to speak.
I really liken whats happening with illegal immigration to [Hurricane] Katrina, Illinois Minuteman Project Director Rosanna Pulido said. We are drowning in illegal aliens and false documents.
I believe that we have to look for different solutions because its obvious that the Department of Homeland Security is not responding.
In August, the Minuteman Projects seminar at the Crystal Lake Holiday Inn was canceled after police informed the hotel that it would have to spend up to $3,500 on extra police to handle protesters at the McHenry County Peace Groups planned demonstration in opposition to the Minutemen.
Attorneys for the Holiday Inn filed an emergency restraining order against the Minutemen, saying the group breached its contract. The restraining order was upheld by a judge.
About two weeks ago, the Peace Group held an immigration seminar at the college.
MCC spokesman Len Walker said the college welcomed all groups as long as they followed a standardized request process.
One stipulation is that the event must be open to the public, Pulido said.
Tickets are $10 for members of the Minuteman Project, the Federation for American Immigration Reform and NumbersUSA. All other tickets are $50, but tickets sold for the last seminar will be honored. No tickets will be sold at the door.
