Bush to veto children's health bill, as promised

WASHINGTON — President Bush told House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday that he is going ahead with his promised veto of a major expansion of a children’s health program despite its overwhelming approval by Congress.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said she told Bush in a morning phone call that she was praying that he would change his mind. “I think I have to pray a little harder,” she told reporters moments later, at a Capitol ceremony where Democrats celebrated passage of the proposed $35 billion increase in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.

“He said he liked people who don’t give up,” Pelosi said, but he also made it clear that he is not backing down.

White House press secretary Dana Perino confirmed Pelosi’s account.

You know Pelosi was down on her knees praying at the small alter she has set up in her house office. She would probably give the pope a run for his money when it comes to the time spent in prayer each day. sarcasm off/

This thing might be veto-proof. Senate is beyond hope. Call the House and tell them NO.

Karl Marx is dead, Ms. Pelosi.

He can't answer your prayers.

Let's hope that Bush's veto ends this bill. The additional spending would have been paid for through a 61-cent increase in the federal excise tax on a pack of cigarettes.

great news, my only question is, if Bush is vetoeing this, why did they pass the ‘medicare perscription expansion’? Selective opposition of socialized medicine?

What will happen when cigarettes get so expensive people can't buy them anymore? The state won't get the taxes, which are already sky-high. Brain surgeons.

This will lead to more smuggling.
