Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- In an interview with the CBS News program "60 Minutes" scheduled for broadcast tonight, pro-life Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas says abortion was behind all of the attacks on him during his confirmation hearings. He called the confirmation process a "high tech lynching."Thomas tells newsman Steve Kroft that the whole issue of alleged sexual harassment was a front for abortion advocates to attack him over the issue of abortion.
"That was the elephant in the room... That was the issue," he tells CBS News. "That is the issue that people are apparently so upset about."
"[That is the issue] that you determine the composition of your Supreme Court and your entire federal judiciary, it seems now," Justice Thomas adds.
The pro-life justice says what happened to him during the hearings was the beginning of a distortion of the confirmation process that is still hurting the nation.
"Things are out of control. That's not good for the country. It's not good for the court," he tells CBS. "What are we going to look like years from now if we can't get people confirmed because everybody gets to attack them. They get to draw and quarter them."
Thomas has been a reliable pro-life vote on the high court and joined with the 5-4 majority in April to uphold the national ban on partial-birth abortions.
I will never forget those hearings. I have always liked and admired Clarence Thomas and am looking forward to this interview and Rush’s also. His confirmation was not really the beginning of this outrageous behavior by the Democrats. The beginning was Judge Robert Bork, a brilliant legal mind who would have been such an asset to the court. Instead of a rock-solid conservative, we got the wishy-washy Anthony Kennedy.
It’s no longer just about Roe. Thomas, Alito and Roberts seem to be the type who will return the SC to sanity. A core group who will put a crimp in the legislation by judiciary. We’re basically held hostage to the flighty wishes of the single judge who will break a tie. The SC has become an oligarchy of unelected elites who trade places being the one person who will take important decisions.
The SC has become a dirty stinking abomination to what the founders had intended, and the democrats like it that way. It is their side that wants to wash away freedoms in the blink of an eye without electoral ramifications.
I would love it if Fred won. I picture a liberal judge being the next to leave his office.
Then the democrats could either:
A: Vote for a conservative judicial appointment. Not likely.
B: Not vote.
The SCOTUS could dwindle to 4 conservative judges and 3 liberals, and if Fred was smart he’d leave it that way - and never compromise by sending someone they could vote for.
Thanks for the post. My thoughts...
I guess it could have been about abortion, but I strongly believe it was about black and white. Any black nominee to the Supreme Court must be liberal like all blacks are supposed to be. Any black who is not a Democrat, is a problem an Oreo, a traitor to his race. Thats what I think it was about.
But wasnt his performance great. And I was so surprised that 60 Minutes aired it.
