JAKARTA, Sept. 30 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Indonesian volcanologists have raised the alert for Mt. Kelud on Java Island to the second-highest level amid increased activity, an official said Sunday.
"There have been five volcanic tremors and four tectonic tremors today. We have raised the alert to the second-highest level since Saturday," said Umar Rosadi, the head of a team observing the 1,731- meter volcano in Ngancar district of East Java Province.
Rosadi said residents have been told to avoid areas within a 5- kilometer radius of the volcano's peak, including a lake with green- colored water that is a popular tourist attraction.
He said local authorities will conduct an evacuation rehearsal next week for more than 20,000 people in some 18 villages of three regencies within a 10-km radius of the peak to prepare for any major eruption.
Mt. Kelud, one of the most restless of Indonesia's 129 active volcanoes, has erupted for 29 times since 1311, Rosadi said.
About 5,000 people were killed during its 1919 eruption. The last eruption occurred at 1990, killing 35 people, Rosadi said.
