WASHINGTON -- Democrat Barack Obama raised more than $19 million from July through September for the presidential primary elections, bringing his total for the year to nearly $80 million, his campaign said Monday.

GOP newcomer to the presidential contest, actor and former Sen. Fred Thompson, raised more than $11.5 million over four months with checks still being counted from more than 70,000 contributors, according to two Republicans familiar with his fund-raising.

Mr. Thompson's amount includes $3.5 million he raised in June, before the third-quarter fundraising period began. Since formally entering the race during the first week of September, Mr. Thompson has raised roughly $200,000 a day.

Mr. Obama's Democratic rival John Edwards reported raising $7 million during the quarter for a total of $30 million for the year. His campaign said the amount put him on track to meet his goal of $40 million by the time the first presidential contests begin in January.

Mr. Edwards' $7 million showed continuing slippage from his high of $14 million in the first quarter. His campaign said it will show $12 million cash on hand, down from the $13.5 million it had at midyear.

Mr. Obama's summer total included donations from 93,000 new contributors, aides said. The Illinois senator also collected money for the general election, making his overall contributions more than $20 million for the quarter.

$200k per day by Thompson is competitive. If he can maintain that, he is a top-tier candidate able to raise 18MM per quarter. I still think the Republican nominee needs to show the ability to raise 30-40MM per quarter once it becomes clear he will be the nominee. Because Hillary is running away from the field and will have no problems raising money, she will pound the Republican nominee beginning in late April or May with advertising that will define him to the sheeple. I cannot bear another repeat of 1996, with Bob Dole confined to an occasional press conference or a late-night show appearance because he ran out of cash winning the nomination - while Bill Clinton pounded him into oblivion in May and June with non-stop advertising.
