New War on Illegal Immigration
ABC News ^ | October 4, 2007 | Pierre Thomas, Jack Date, Theresa Cook

It is a new war on illegal immigration that grows increasingly visible and more intense by the day.

I think we're talking about something the American people have never seen before, which is what do we do and what do we see when the government gets serious about using all the legal tools available to make the law work and to enforce the law," Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff told ABC News in an exclusive interview.

"And that's why there has been a tenfold increase or more in the number of absconders [fugitive aliens] that we've rounded up and sent back. And that's why there have been dramatic increases in our removals, [and] we've gone from one or two criminal cases five or six years ago to about 800 criminal cases this past year, because we are really pulling out all the stops," Chertoff continued.

Across the country, federal agents have been raiding businesses and homes in an unprecedented campaign targeting illegal immigrants.

Just last month, federal agents conducted work-site raids in seven cities, arresting nearly 200 undocumented workers. Another 2,357 illegal immigrants previously ordered deported were also rounded up.

In the last week in California, 1,300 illegal immigrants were arrested -- one of the biggest sweeps in recent memory. On Long Island, authorities rounded up 186 people -- most are believed to be gang members. In Nevada, more that 50 workers at McDonald's restaurants were recently targeted.

But the raids have sparked protests in a frightened and frustrated immigrant community.

"They're not criminals. They want to work," said one protestor. "We want to do things right for them and for this country."

You’ve got to love the McDonald’s Corporation.

What a bunch of sell out bastards they are.

Profits regardless of consequences.

This sudden push is a direct result of the people pressing their politicians to strictly enforce our existing immigration laws. This is only the tip of the ICEberg. We need to maintain that pressure on the Congress Critters until all illegals have been deported or felt enough pressure to leave voluntarily. Great work Freepers!!

I think it’s the gov’t putting on a show for us...smoke and mirrors. They aren’t serious. But of course, any little bit can only be good, as far as I am concerned.

Of course it is. They've aided and abetted the violent invasion of 25,000,000 (million) and they grab a few hundred here and there.

How stupid do they think Americans are?

They are certainly lawbreakers. However, it is clear that if you disagree with a law, it’s ok to ignore it....right?

The government is a joke. All they have to do is dispatch U.S. Army troops to the border NOW, then build a fence and crack down on illegals here under existing immigration laws. The rest of the illegals will take the hint and go the F home. And illegals in prisons serving less than 5 years should be kicked out as well and save some state tax dollars. It’s not rocket science, this problem can be easily resolved within a week.

For the first time we're beginning to see a reduction in the fugitive alien backlog," Julie Myers, head of ICE, said at a Wednesday press conference in Los Angeles. "We're down now to approximately 595,000 illegal alien fugitives, down about 36,000 from the beginning of this fiscal year.

REDUCTION ??? IIRC in 2002 we were discussing some 350K of these absconders the gov't was going to rid us of......now we *down to only* 595K ???

(Julie's math isn't too good)

That’s right. Come in legally, and we’ll welcome you. Sneak in and freeload off us, and we’ll kick you out.

The problem is some of these wannabe political leaders are seeing the constituents who they planned to exploit vanish.

Jerkoff is such a dirt bag, when you get to 800 a day you'll be doing something, jerk!. You may even start to earn your pay check, but then it will only take you a hundred years are so to round them all up.

Does the man have any clue how stupid he sounds.

The Feds believe we are stupid. This is all window dressing. If the Feds were serious they would secure our ports and borders. How long before they again attempt to pass an amnesty bill? Where’s the damn fence?!?

You know what? I won’t go to a friggin McDonalds or any other fast food franchise if they are supporting illegals. I’ll go to a “NON franchise” restaurant who employs local people and pay the 5% more to stand by our laws !!!

The government has a long way to go before I’m convinced they are serious. The stepped up activity might just be a way to cover their asses if there’s a terrorist attack. I hope I’m wrong.

The question I had after reading the article is simply how come...Why the “Lip Service”?

There are, and have been existing laws regarding Illegal Aliens in this Nation since the beginning.

Chertoff’s department is in charge of enforcing the laws. I don’t believe for a moment that disregarding the enforcement of law is solely the responsibility of the head of the Department in our Government, especially as it has been disregarded since long before Chertoff.

This newfound zeal to enforce the Immigration laws is most certainly due the Power of the People, as we have spoken, but I believe it is simply smoke and mirrors until Government can find a means to circumvent our will.

I do not know any specific practices of McDonalds. I doubt there is a corporate policy to hire illegals. An employer’s hands are tied. The rules regarding document checking do not allow an employer to take action against the employee.
