WASHINGTON U.S. President George W. Bush volunteered an unapologetic defence Friday of his administration's harsh interrogations of terror suspects, saying they are lawful, helpful and won't stop.
Amid fresh skepticism that U.S. interrogators may be going too far when trying to pry information from terror suspects, Mr. Bush said: The American people expect their government to take action to protect them from further attack. And that's exactly what this government is doing. And that's exactly what we'll continue to do.
For decades, the United States had two paths for questioning suspects: the U.S. justice system and the military's Army Field Manual. But after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Washington quietly created the CIA's terror interrogation program, and it has become one of the administration's most sensitive and debated activities.
The White House regards it as one of its most successful tools in the war on terror. They say it has been consistent with U.S. and international law all along.
But critics say the program leaves a stain on the United States' image around the world and could place Americans captured overseas in greater danger of being tortured. They fear administration interpretations of law have established loopholes allowing for treatment almost indistinguishable from torture.

“Bush unapologetic about interrogations of terror suspects”
Good!
Tell them we use tapes of Hillary Clinton’s cackle as our most extreme torture technique.
Hooray for our prez, the Honorable George Bush!

Jennifer Loven would rather lose the war. Jennifer Loven wants to wear muslim garb, bow five times a day to worship the devil, and have her husband have her (stoned) killed because she drove a car and went to the market unescorted. Jennifer Loven has a wish for the democrats to hold absolute power. Jennifer Loven believe it better to obtain power for democrats rather than be other than a ‘rather’.
I am truly irritated with those agents of government who sought and achieved the authority to use torture against high value imminent threat enemies.
I am irritated BECAUSE with that very APPROPRIATE authorization, the METHODS they chose to use are antiquated, a throwback to the 1940s!
From the very beginning of the WoT, I advocated that if they needed to use duress against these murderous villains, they use the best technology we have today, NOT something seen in old black and white movies.
To start with, since WWII, our pharmacology alone has advanced to an incredible extent. Billions of dollars has poured into drug and medical research, and we have at our command chemicals of extraordinary potency that could make an interrogation reach a successful conclusion in just a few seconds.
By the 1960s, the ability to brainwash was so advanced that we could take the most vicious killers of terrorism and make them our close friends—even turning them into assassins to kill their terrorist comrades safely hidden out of our reach.
If nothing else, we could make them totally averse to violence in any form, advocates of a reformation of Islam away from its culture of violence and towards a peaceful, non-violent, progressive and democratic religion. Convinced beyond any doubt that Allah himself had set them on this new path, and willing to preach to any and all who would listen.
Opportunities wasted. Instead Gitmo and many of our prisons are filled with enemy combatants and potential combatants, who live for an opportunity to escape, then return to a life of violence, death and destruction.
Imagine how different Iraq would be if we to set up an assembly line to “reform” jihadis, especially foreigners, who would return to their home nations and tell all their friends that resistance is futile, and that the way to salvation is through peace and freedom.
