Three years ago, Ted Mondale's new company signed a $550,000 contract with Hennepin County to provide a computer software program that was supposed to revolutionize the way data from real estate records is made available over the Internet. The revolution is off to a slow start.
Though the county has paid $314,000 to Nazca Solutions Inc., which Mondale cofounded as part of a career move from politics into technology, there is still no program ready for public use.
Mondale had originally promised a finished product in six months and, following two years of tinkering, said it would be ready last December. "I think we're very close," he now says. "I don't think it's newsworthy that a highly complicated [technology] project may be a little late."
Although the software is working in some smaller locations, optimism about its promise is mixed with disappointment in Hennepin County. County Board Chairman Randy Johnson said he recently met with Mondale and asked "why aren't we there yet?" Though Johnson remains a supporter of the project, he acknowledged that "at a certain point, we're going to have to say, 'You haven't made it' ... and move on."

What a smug prick. Were the Mondale's a prominent Republican family, this would be heralded as the biggest fraud scheme of the 21st century. All parties involved would have been frog-marched long before this and Bush would be blamed.
... while letting the cheating Democrat weasel keep the half a mill he conned out of the county coffers, that is.

But isn’t there a name for taking money to deliver a product then failing to deliver the product? I’m no lawyer, but it seems to me I read about that being at least a ... dubious ... act, maybe even criminal.
All but two or three of Massachusetts' counties have had a searchable,free,internet system for real estate transactions up and running for a couple of years.
Normally, that would be true. But, this IS Hennepin county, home of Minneapolis (illegal immigrant amnesty city).
Liberals won’t prosecute their own, here. They’ll just chalk it up to experience....and move on.
Why don't you see if Hennepin County, MN wants to pay $500,000 to you, with an actual product.
That’s not the way it works. You can only charge that kind of money for vapor-ware. Real products are much cheaper since they have no dream to buy into.
Tax roll databases, and RE transaction systems, can be very complicated and very frustrating. Many of the property appraisers are still running hardware from 30 or more years ago. There’s no one left who remembers why the software does half the things it does. And a change in one part of the system can appear to go well but actually wreaking havoc in an another, supposedly unrelated, part of the system.
I can’t tell you how happy I am to be out of that business!
