Federal agents detained six suspected illegal immigrants Thursday morning in the first multiple arrest of Latinos publicized by the Maury County Sheriffs Department since it was sued in federal court.
The arrests were spurred by a complaint from a Maury County construction business owner who said the men used false documents to obtain employment, Sheriff Enoch George said. He declined to release the business name.
Hopefully, what this will do is encourage other businesses if theyve got illegals working for them to give us a call, George said.
But Catalina Nieto, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition, said she thinks the sheriff is attempting to bully small business owners into breaking federal employment laws and enticing them to racially profile workers. Members of the coalition held a rally in August to protest Georges efforts to combat illegal immigration in Maury County.
We think this is basically an immigrant witch hunt that encourages suspicion of any worker who looks or sounds different, Nieto said.
The arrests were made about 10:30 a.m. by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, authorities said. Deputies sent a squad car to accompany immigration agents during the arrest. The men were being held at the Maury County Jail Thursday.
Authorities said they have continued to follow up on citizen complaints and detain suspected illegal immigrants since a federal lawsuit was filed July 5 alleging immigration agents and deputies deprived illegal immigrants of their constitutional rights by conducting unauthorized searches.
Capt. Nathan Johns said seven suspected illegal immigrants working at a construction site in northern Maury County were detained about a week ago by immigration agents after the Sheriffs Department received complaints from citizens. Efforts to confirm this Thursday evening with a federal spokeswoman were unsuccessful.
We are going to follow up on those complaints just like we follow up on all complaints, Johns said. If we find that information to be true, we pass it on to the federal authorities.
At least 90 suspected illegal immigrants have been detained this year in Maury County. In July, a Nashville immigration attorney sued the department and the U.S. government in federal court. The suit alleges deputies and federal immigration agents illegally entered the homes of illegal immigrants without warrants and detained them unlawfully.
In an affidavit filed with the court, special agent Jonathan A. Hendrix said the illegal immigrants consented to the searches.

Communist politicians give all the freebies to the welfare class and they will vote on the promise of more free stuff. The normal hard working Americans don’t seem to care enough to vote. The lame stream media will either ignore or crucify any candidate who has any integrity and glorify any slime ball that runs for office.
Them’s some mighty well fed rebels in that picture. Somebody’s been gittin double rations ....(grins)

Bless your heart. Your post choked me up, and reminded me of another friend. He had a major childhood illness that progressively left it’s mark as he got older. But, by the time he realized that something terrible was happening to him, he was no longer able to work, and had no income - therefore no doctor. He couldn’t get medical diagnosis or care, medicine, or treatment. He couldn’t even get food stamps for three months. He got sicker and sicker, and took shelter where he could find it.
It sickens me to think our country can abandon it’s own citizens in time of need (yet give subsidies to those who are breaking the law by being here illegally.)
My brother is one of them re-enactors. We like to joke about him and compare him to the pixs of our gr.gr.granfather and his brothers who did fight in the Civil War.
None looked like a well fed fat commissioner general
