PUBLIC PAYS FOR UPPER CLASS' PRIVATE ED. (NYC elite disability scammers?)
NY Post ^ | October 8, 2007 | Andrea Peyser

PARENTS say it's harder to get into than Harvard. It's an elite, private Manhattan school that mainly takes kids of the rich, famous, well connected. Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick's son went to the Churchill School, and a nephew attends. Artist and filmmaker Julian Schnabel's son goes there.

Designer Dana Buchman wrote a memoir about her daughter's experience at the school, which caters to bright kids, grades kindergarten through 12, who've been declared learning disabled.

But the thing that separates Churchill from the Daltons and Chapins is the price: It's free.

Rather - you, the taxpayer, fund private education for kids whose parents can afford the freight.

Because 96 percent of Churchill's 405 students get their tuition - $34,000 this year - picked up by the state and city. You buy these kids state-of-the-art facilities, plus class sizes that top out at 12.

Of the 16 students whose parents write a fat check this year, most will ask for a refund - and get it.

I asked Bacon to comment, but he said "no" and hung up.

Schnabel did not return a call.

Top political consultant Hank Sheinkopf, whose daughter attends for free, admitted it stinks rich kids primarily get a gratis private-school education. "What's wrong . . . is that poor kids can't get in," he said. "You have to hire an expensive lawyer. I'd like to see other people have this opportunity, too."

Whistle was blown on Churchill by mom whose son is enrolled - against her wishes. In fighting with her wealthy doctor ex-husband to get their boy into a mainstream school, she handed me the Churchill directory.

It reads like a society register. For every kid on it who lives in Brooklyn, there are perhaps 20 on Park Avenue, in Greenwich Village or on Sutton Place.

I’m not clear on how “rich kids” attend “free”.

Never mind:

“Designer Dana Buchman wrote a memoir about her daughter’s experience at the school, which caters to bright kids, grades kindergarten through 12, who’ve been declared learning disabled.”

“Learning disabled” is the label for the wealthy that attend for “free” if they don’t have the grades?

I’m sure that hard working cops, firefighters, and construction workers are more than happy to be paying the tuition for rich superstar Kevin Bacon’s son to attend an exclusive private school.

The parents file a lawsuit saying this is the only school with a program that will help their ‘special’ child. The school has to provide an appropriate education for all children, including ‘disabled’ ones, so they must pay for this. It is a scam.

Try this guy:

Top political consultant Hank Sheinkopf, whose daughter attends for free, admitted it stinks rich kids primarily get a gratis private-school education. There is a Federal government program which has many of the same effects.

It is called the Section 811 program and is administered by HUD.

It pays for housing for the disabled in many communities, including wealthy ones.

The way it works in these places is that wealthy people with disabled children join together to create non-profits dedicated to bringing government funded housing to their community. They then win the grants, build the housing, and are members of the Board of Directors.

Technically they are not supposed to be able to get "their kids" into the housing, but somehow the kids (when they reach adult status) seem to be there....

This gets the young adults out of their parent's house, but still close enough to visit. It is a win/win for the parents and the kids, and a big loser for the federal taxpayer.

Don't even dream about killing this program--the last time somebody in Congress tried they were surrounded by teary-eyed kids in wheelchairs.

:-(

Some of the rich got that way by knowing how to scam us.

Apparently the parents pay the $34,000 up front then claim it back because their child is “disabled”

Thats why regular Americans can’t send their child there...its free after you pay the big price tag...

Buuuuuuuuut you get to pay for their children to go, so stop complaining..think of the children...

Sounds to me like the parents get an IEP - Individual Education Plan for their “learning disabled” kid. They write into the IEP that their child requires a Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE) and that the only school that can offer FAPE is this Churchill School. And, that they hire the right attornys to make it happen.

This is really effing outrageous. I read it in the paper today and decided to search FR for it.

The author, Peyser, is generally a liberal twit, but leftwing class-warfare occassionally trumps their love of any government funding no matter how outrageous.

Kevin Bacon is a sponge on the working man.
