In the end socialism will always fail when people can effect the Atlas Shrugs escape, where those who think their lives can be better outside of the welfare state vote with their feet and take their wallets with them.

Those whose life strategy depends on being able to feather their own nests by seizing the wealth and income of others will stay. They always demand more, and always flock to support politicians who can promise to “fund unmet needs”.

Together, this is the Death Spiral of the Socialist State, which must do all it can to prevent people from leaving, or to attract new victims into the reach of the tax man.

As harbingers of this, Kali already gives its tax man the power to pursue citizens who recently left the state. New York City taxes mobile workers (like musicians and athletes) who set foot in the city for one day. Income taxes are piled upon all other taxes due, like sales and lodging taxes.

Earth to New Jersey Citizens: escape while you can and while your homes are worth something. The N-1 game of Musical Chairs has already started.

Funny - elsewhere in the article it states that the exodus might be slowed by the drop in property values. Might be too late to get out while the "getting is good"

As does Massachusetts. I read an article a few years ago in the NY Post regarding this. If I remember the numbers correctly Derek Jeter had to pay about $8,000 in MA state taxes during a three game visit to Beantown. Ouch!
