What would happen to the U.S. economy if al Qaeda were to slip some type of biological agent into the U.S. that killed 8 million workers? If your answer is an economic disaster, you're right. 9/11 killed only a few thousand and it caused a recession. Killing 8 million workers could produce a major depression.
The removal of 8 million workers from the economy by any means would be an economic disaster.
Yet, the Minutemen and the ... in charge of Homeland Security both want to remove 8 million workers from the American economy.
Fortunately, a federal judge has blocked the recent attempt to destroy the economy by using the Social Security administration's error filled records to force employers to fire people just because of discrepancies in Social Security records which may or may not accurate. A coalition of labor, business and farm groups filed a federal lawsuit to block the action. The judge ruled against Homeland Security because of the potential for harming citizens whose records might be inaccurate.

O they need to S T F U!!!!!!!
In other news, less than 1/3 of the criminals would be eradicated.
Not only that but Bush will be blamed for not doing enough to stop it, even though the left continues to attempt to take away every tool Bush has as his disposal to thwart terrorist attacks (warrantless wiretaps etc).
Let me get this straight, it would be BAD to remove 8 million people who are not paying taxes, are sending large amounts of money out of the country (illegally), and are consuming large amounts of public services.
Second, don't we have some unemployed poor citizens, who could and should do these jobs?
Third, if we don't create some disincentives, it will be 100 million.
What an idiot this writer is. As if the 9/11 deaths were the ONLY reason for the recession!
You forgot the BARF ALERT!
The economy did quite well.
That's all of them. Illegal aliens committed crimes coming here and they continue to commit crimes by staying here. Ship'em all back and NEVER let them return.
Absolutely. The fact that some major brokerage houses were in the twin towers and that a many of their employees, records and data were lost had absolutely nothing to do with the recession.
Dumb comparison. 9/11 happened in one day, and caused a brief recession because of the pessimism or fear created, but mostly because short recessions were caused in the travel and tourism industries.
If 8 million illegals were removed from the workforce, it would be a gradual thing and they’d mostly be replaced gradually. And the cost of many gov’t services at all levels would go down.
BIG difference in the ‘removal’ of 8 million illegal aliens and the DEATHS by TERROR of 8 million legal US citizens. Big damn difference. The author cannot be THIS stupid. Oh, wait . . . .
They can work to make things better for themselves by first obeying our laws. We did just fine before the 8 million got here. What makes you think that we can’t survive without them now. Are you saying we should just open our borders to anyone?
At least the US would still have an economy.
I think the Arab world would have a hard time setting up kebab stands on a radioactive glass parking lot.
Right. And let’s not forget that the economy was starting to slide into trouble around a year and a half BEFORE the 2000 elections. But that never fit the “Bush’s fault” narrative.
How would it affect the economy if terrorists killed 8 million *non*-workers, which would amount to 2.6% of the American population.
Well, if it was 8 million retirees, out of 35 million people over 65 years old, and the elderly consume most of our health care dollars, the price of medical care in the US might drop by 10% or more.
And if it was 8 million people below the poverty line, we would no longer need to pay about 1/3rd of what the government typically spends to help the poor, which is a lot of money.
And since most most illegal aliens in the US work at minimum wage or lower jobs, the immediate impact would be a slight price hike, and the general rise of the minimum wage to attract new workers.
As such, it would hike tax revenues significantly, because wage employees have few ways of avoiding (legally) taxation compared to those who make more. It would also help to elevate many out of poverty, so they would no longer be needing government benefits.
If terrorists managed to kill 8 million people, Democrats and tinfoil types like Ron Paul would blame Bush, American policy, and of course Bush, for it all.
Where this political hit piece goes astray is the inadvertent admission Bush didn’t bring on a recession in the wake of the 9/11 attack.
