The USA needs to overhaul it's "legal alien" process.
The illegal aliens that are already here, that are hard working, good people, need a path to legality, not a path to citizenship.
They should pay taxes, including back taxes as much as possible, BUT
We should also secure our border first.
We cannot accept the fact that our borders are as insecure as they are.
Anyone could bring weapons of mass destruction across our borders, and I'm not so sure that they already haven't.
We cannot continue to let people cross our border without our knowing who they are.
There must be a way for people to come to our country to work without breaking our laws.
The border comes first.
THEN we work on a path to legality for the hard working good people that are already here.
If they have a violent misdameanor, any type of a felony, or are a known gang member, out they go.
If they DO want to become a citizen they go to the back of the line at that point and wait their turn.
I don't have the plan to accomplish this but I truly believe that this is what needs to be accomplished.

Would support putting pressure on the employers of illegal aliens to fire their illegal alien workers. The illegal aliens would return to Mexico (and other countries). The border should be secured (this should be started earlier, but if successful will probably finish by the time there is a mass exodus of illegal aliens). Then some sort of 'guest worker' system can be put in place so that millions of foreigners more can come in legally (and get background and medical checks) and get jobs, pay taxes, etc. There should be some degree of punishment for illegal aliens already here (just as there should be some degree of punishment for intentional jaywalking, being in a moving car without a seatbelt (when illegal), smoking in places where smoking is illegal, etc. That part of the author's article is not very persuasive.
