That has always bothered me also. A accident on a motorcycle is almost always more dangerous than an automobile, yet the car occupants are required to wear seat belts, but cyclist don't need to wear helmets!? Someone please explain this to me...

there is a set variable for seat bealts.
There are thousands of helmets for various purposes with various functions.

A bicycle helmet is nothing more than a fashion statement- if you really think you need one, spend the extra twenty bucks on a DOT helmet that might actually work.
