I think that it may be possible that he's a 'true believer' and is able to maintain his belief system because he surrounds himself with similarly slow-witted sycophants and never engages in debate. He's isolated himself from the truth and is able to dismiss contrarian data as merely more of the "evil right wing propaganda machine". His power allows him to live in a little Leftist bubble, and his lackeys protect him from ever having to confront the truth in anything close to an honest way.

Jim Jones wasn't interested in alternate opinion either, as I recall, and he honestly believed in the idiocy that spewed from his mouth. That's one reason cults are dangerous....they don't allow themselves to engage in meaningful, honest debate like everyone else.
