was written by Robert Sherwood, a former FDR speechwriter and possibly the sole member of Roosevelt's retinue with a clear understanding of communism.

Unfortunately, this is far from being true... FDR's retinue had plenty of people who had a clear understanding of communism, starting with Alger Hiss and I'm sure many other practicing anti-American communists. But I get the author's point.
