Wait and see with Mr. Chertoff.
"We care about the border environment as much as anyone," Knocke said. "But when weighing a lizard in the balance with human lives, this border infrastructure project is the obvious choice." Attorneys for Chertoff also argue that environmental damage from illegal border crossers is greater than anything that would occur from the barriers.
That makes sense to me...I hope he gets his way.
Yup, sounds as if someone has a brain.
Something that has been ignored by the "environmentalists for too long, I thinks.
Never understood the silence where the illegals ate the eggs of endangered species while transiting through to San Diego and nary a whisper..
I don’t either. I hope this is true but I am not counting on it. Its just something to shut those who want the fence up for awhile I think. I don’t believe this Administration has any intention of building a fence or stopping the illegals in any major way.
People employed in the enviormental industries all share a brainwashed hatred for the US military, GWB, and capitalism.
Any self described enviormentalist would have no problem telling a happy five year old child that the world will be miserable, caustic, and treeless no thanks to greedy rich men.
BUMP
If this is a trial balloon, go for it Chertoff.
This judge is a fifth columnist.
Somebody needs to challenge the judiciary. The Executive and Legislative branches have been bending over for them for too long. I’ll have a whole new view of Chertoff if he does it. Make the stinking courts enforce their rulings.
“Bob Dreher, vice president for conservation law for Defenders of Wildlife, said what might stop Chertoff from exempting the project from federal laws is, “They have to do, I think, the politically costly thing of publicly saying, ‘We’re above the law.’” “
The law says that Chertoff can exempted any of the laws that will stop him from building the fence. This is not “above the law”. It is the law.
Bob Drecher you are a hack and are lying about the law. I can read and understand what the law says Chertoff can do and he can build the fence anywhere he wants.
Some one in Washington doing what a vast majority of Americans want?
Refreshing!
Chertoff has not demonstrated much of a desire to enforce the borders.... so I am not holding my breath.
Some lefty judge “ordered” the Navy not to use sonar in exercises (to save the whales, supposedly) and the Navy told the judge to get stuffed, and went ahead.
Chertoff can do the same for the same reason: national security trumps one lefty judge.
“I’m skeptical”
We all are. The folks in the Admin and Congress have been totally out of touch with the American people. Perhaps, our loud screams over amnesty and the border fence are finally being heard?
I would place any bet just yet.
I haven’t read anything in the Constitution that requires the executive branch to comply with unconstitutional judicial decisions.
I bet a Donut he wont do it....
Other environmental impacts by illegals that the environmentalists should be upset about (10% of people in US are illegal by some estimates):
- increased water/sewer use
- increased traffic congestion leading to increased commute times and reduced fuel efficiency
- reduction in open space as land is converted to housing
... I’m sure there are many others.
If the fence is built everywhere else, the funneled traffic of illegal crossers is going to trample this area flat. Bunnyhuggers have a choice. Either put up with a few barriers here and there, or see their precious riparian resources ground under the boots of a Million Migrating Mexicans.
