"Just a wild guess: because gravity was less than today?"

Something must have been fundamentally physically different between then and now, but that question seems to be deliberately avoided by mainstream science.

Add to the mix that comet orbits are just right to have originated WITHIN the solar system - not from some hypothesized cloud past Pluto. And guess where that point seems to be -— your correct = the asteroid belt, as well as another point beyond Saturn. This is the Exploding Planets Theory.

Naturally mainstream guys avoid all of this is as I said it is too confusing and creates too much uncertainty, also most of them have too much money (in grants) and prestige invested. Best to keep as many people as possible believing all is well and nothing catastrophic ever happens.

Just like most people believe the electromagnetic spectrum is all there is, while ignoring James Clerk Maxwell's 200 theorems from which Heavyside took four and discarded the rest, changing the four field theorems to vector because fields were impossible - from there we have the electromagnetic spectrum in all its glory.

And so it goes ...
