He was skirting a very fine line with some of the things he said about Ezra Taft Benson. If it's on the political level then it's fair game, if he's confusing politics with doctrine then it's not. IIRC a certain general authority form the Navajo nation was excommunicated for doing just that 20 years ago or so.

I guess a good template to examine were the criticisms levelled against the church by Brigham H. Roberts when he first ran for Congress. After the campaign, he was given a choice of publically apologizing or excommunication. He apologized.
I don't remember what his critical comments were, but he most certainly did not endorse global warming, abortion or call the evangelicals "anti-christian."
