Craig Says He Was Entrapped in Sex Sting (tonight on Dateline)
The Washington Post ^ | Oct 16, 2007 | MATTHEW DALY, AP

WASHINGTON -- Idaho Sen. Larry Craig said he was entrapped in a sex sting at an airport men's room and was not aware of the bathroom's reputation as a spot to cruise for gay sex. "Well, I certainly am now," Craig told NBC's Matt Lauer in an interview aired Tuesday night.

"Were you prior?" Lauer asked.

"Not at all," Craig responded. "I go to bathrooms to use bathrooms."

Craig said it was a "tough call" when he decided not to tell his wife or children about the arrest.

"I didn't want to embarrass my wife, my kids, Idaho and my friends," Craig said. "I should have told my wife. I should have told my kids. And most importantly, I should have told counsel."

Suzanne Craig said that when her husband told her the story was about to break, "I felt like the floor was falling out from under me. And I felt almost like I was going down a drain for a few moments."

Craig, 62, says he is not gay, and in the NBC interview, he and his wife said their marriage was based on love. Asked by Lauer whether theirs was a marriage of convenience to cover "a gay lifestyle," Suzanne Craig responded, "I would never do that. ... That's almost like selling your soul for something

-snip-

Craig also discussed his relationship with Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Craig was Senate liaison for Romney's campaign, a post he abandoned when the scandal became known. Romney called Craig's conduct "disappointing and disgraceful" and immediately dropped Craig when the guilty plea was revealed.

"I was very proud of my association with Mitt Romney," Craig said. "And he not only threw me under his campaign bus, he backed up and ran over me again."

I’ve always been leery of asking a stranger for the time ever since I heard years ago that asking the time is a gay come on.

I also remember hearing about a group of college kids travelin in Spain. To find each other in a crowd they had devised the notion of quacking like a duck to draw attention. Then they discovered that quacking was a gay come on in Spain!

After decades of relative anonymity, Craig seems determined to finish his career by making a public spectacle of himself.

Yeah, Craig is bi partisan

Didn't Matt Lauer ask him if he was bi and he denied it? ;^)

"Closed for the night maybe?"

That's a possibility. Maybe the World Club sprung a leak and flooded or something. But remember -- Craig said he frequently used that same bathroom he was arrested in. Would the World Club be closed and out of order on every one of those occasions?

"And I believe the 'sting' made sure that there were empty stalls."

Your evidence? Or is this just more loose talk?

" Dem guy who hangs in bathroom hoping to catch someone...?"

I'm assuming you have evidence for this claim about Officer Karsnia's political affiliation (and motive). Do you?

...As a Senator he said yes to whatever got him outta this PC moment in a toilet. I bet at this second he had no clue sex was involved and I also bet the media thought the same at the time.

During the interview with the police sergeant immediately following the bathroom incident, Craig said, "I don't do these kinds of things." The problem there is that the sgt had not said what Craig was being questioned for, said nothing re homosexual sex. So.... what did Craig mean by "these kinds of things?"

Also, in the Lauer interview, Craig stated the police officer "jerked" him out of the bathroom. That was nowhere in the original transcripts or descriptions.

What normal man would falsely plead guilty to attempted sodomy under *any* circumstances?

**********
A politician who would be presumed guilty by a cynical voting electorate. The word of a politician vs. a policeman; who would believe him?

Whether he’s guilty or not, everybody assumes he is. But this cop may not be pristine after all. Craig should have investigated him. imo

["And I believe the 'sting' made sure that there were empty stalls."]

No, I actually read the account.

Those 'sex stings' in bathrooms make sure that all the stalls are not occupied so that when someone takes the one next to the police officer it is deliberate on their part.

“A politician who would be presumed guilty by a cynical voting electorate.”

No way.

“The word of a politician vs. a policeman; who would believe him?”

More people than would believe him if he admitted it before he denied it.
