Can anybody clarify what Fred meant by this: "You're going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship but not make it so easy that it's unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law." Sunday, March 11, 2007 http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,258222,00.html This sounds identical to McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill.

“Do you check immigration status of people who deliver your pizza?”

I don’t let Guatemalan illegals work at my home for eight years without knowing that they are illegal and then send them to my son’s house.

Any one that has a working relationship with me, I make sure that they are legal and that they are not being paid off the books, like this shady group of characters that the Governor hired.

That has always been my way since I was a teenager in the sixties and it is still my way, as a Southern California plumber that sometimes has to hire labor to dig ditches and break up concrete.

And yes, that includes anybody that claims to be a business, that wants any relationship with me, ESPECIALLY at my home.

I am not an idiot or a liar like the Governor, so I look into such intimate working relationships when I have a reason to be suspicious.

It also saves me the trouble of having to speak Spanish to my workers, like the Governor had to, all those many years.

"According to RCP averages, Romney has 8.4% lead in Iowa. I can’t complain. I think it is better than Romney supporters thought in their wildest dreams. Romney is getting more donations from Iowa than any other candidate. Please explain. Fred would be advertising there as well, if he had money. Too bad he don’t. Fred surged some time ago but his poll numbers (and intrade numbers) are going down. I think he was tied with Rudy for a while. More people get to know Fred, less they like him, given the expectations. Reagan he ain’t. My ideal candidate would be Rick Santorum. Too bad he isn’t available."

HA HA HA!! Fred has $7 million in cash, though he must not feel the need to advertise in Iowa since he is bounding upwards in the polls to a close second.

Fred wanted illegals to have aspirations of citizenship. I would like to know if he still supports it or does he deny it (ie he lied in Fox News interview). My bet is on the latter.

Anyway, Mitt did not hire some group of shady people. He hired a legal company (which apparently, hired a lot of illegals and one legal). If this is all you have, you are pathetic. If I would try to check the immigration status of Verizon repair man who shows up here, I would be in trouble (and denied service).

There is a lot valid criticism that can brought up re Mitt, but this is certainly not one of them.

Dump the phony straw man BS. Of course illegals should aspire to be citizens of the most powerful country in the world. It doesn’t mean they shouldn’t go back to their country and stand in line.

“HA HA HA!! Fred has $7 million in cash”

Frankly, $7M is laughable sum and a major restriction for any candidate. It means he can’t spend money except for absolutely necessities (travel, staff salaries etc).

Romney has 100,000 contributors so far (and he is getting more donations in Iowa than anybody else). He also has $500M available in cash, if needed.

If Fred is so popular, why don’t he have real money?

The workers said they were paid in cash at $9 to $10 an hour and sometimes worked 11-hour days. Romney never inquired about their status, they said.

How would they know? You can't walk up to someone and ask if they are legal. It's against the law. It's even against the law for an employer to ask.

It’s great to hear that Thompson’s against amnesty.

Unfortunately, everyone’s against amnesty, including Bush.

If anyone wants to do a public service - and perhaps get a little fame - go to Thompson’s appearances and ask him real questions designed to reveal exactly where he stands. Obviously, just asking him whether he supports amnesty isn’t going to work.

If you can’t do that, please encourage others to go to his appearances and ask him questions.

And, that applies to all the other candidates as well.

“If I would try to check the immigration status of Verizon repair man who shows up here, I would be in trouble (and denied service).”

You seem confused by the difference of someone being sent by a national corporation to your home for a delivery, or a 30 minute installation job and someone have an eight year relationship with people at your home, where your wife and children live.

Being in the small business world, I have yet to see a small business that doesn’t pay taxes that doesn’t look shady, especially with non English speaking foreign workers.

I have done it all my adult life, if I suspicion that someone is evading paying taxes on their employees, I make inquiries of them, if they don’t satisfy me then I open the Yellow Pages and replace them.

I have never studied law or been a Governor, but I have been successfully dealing with illegals for my entire life.

This isn’t rocket science you know.

In my perfect world, Thompson would observe that we have two different illegal immigrant problems:

1. Terrorists taking advantage of loose borders to invade unknown to the U.S.

2. Illegal workers from south of the border who have swarmed into this nation like a beehive.

They are two very separate things that require two very different approaches. The first one is caused by radical Islamic forces, and is a cry for much more secure scrutiny of immigrants.

The second one is caused by economics -- specifically, LIBERAL Big Government economic policies of A) creating and imposing artificially high minimum wages as a base pay for businesses and B) creating social government largesse programs that invite illegal "minorities" to come to the U.S. and become dependent on taxpayers for basic services. Folks, the biggest fence in the world is an empty and VERY expensive cannon in this battle. Likewise, the idea of deporting 6 to 12 million illegals would result in armed warfare in most of the West, with neighbors, friends, and businesses fighting each other. It would be the stupidest thing on planet earth.

Hence the solutions are, essentially, pursuing LESS GOVERNMENT solutions. Mountains of regulation including minimum wage and health insurance force businesses to pay wages for unskilled labor that seem poor here, but are lavish to folks South of the Border, who find themselves in the position of getting very highly paid work for low skills. All they have to do is show up and they're making enough to support many families in Mexico; their competition is mostly sullen American youth with a bad work ethic and sense of entitlement. What would YOU do?

*sigh* I wish Fred would help people better understand the illegal immigrant problem.

There is no contradiction between federalism and the Constitutional mandate for the federal government to provide for the common defense. You said it, the problem on our southern border is indeed an invasion, and the federal government’s clearly defined Constitutional duty is to repel it.

From Article 1, Section 8: “The Congress shall have the Power...To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions.”

Only those powers not specifically granted to the federal government are retained by the states or the people. The responsibility to repel invasions is not one of them.

You want me to walk a mile in the invader's shoes?

You say that trying to deport 6 to 12 illegal aliens is impossible. When their numbers reach 100 million, you will say it's that much more impossible. Beware the conservative who says our hands are tied.

Throw the scofflaw employers in jail for 5 years minimum and fine them $100K per illegal employer per year of service for each year that the illegal was employed.

You claim to want less government, less liberalism, but your do-nothing policy ensures more government, more liberalism. You fret about armed warfare while we are being occupied and conquered with our hands tied behind our backs.

You are from Minnesota. I am a fifth-generation California native. I don't know anything about Minnesota, but I do know FOR SURE that armed warfare would erupt in the Southwest if attempts were made to physically hunt-down and deport all illegal workers from South of the border. It would result in far more bloodshed and strife than attempting to address the ROOT CAUSES created by Big Government liberalism: artificially high wages and welfare programs that invite illegals to come and suck on the American taxpayer tit. Why is that so far beyond your comprehension? I am mystified.

Up there in Minnesota, you don't have to worry about it; down here in Southern California, I would. I am on the front lines. I got news for you: illegal Mexicans have been part of the Southwest American workforce for generations. Many generations. And they were never a major problem until government welfare largesse for "minorities" and sky-high wages for low-skilled work were mandated by Big Government. Please, please, please, STOP confusing symptoms with causes. You can treat symptoms until you turn blue in the face and until bloodshed erupts between peaceable productive folks -- and the causes will continue to create a horrible festering problem because you cannot or will not face the truth.

You think punishing American business is the solution to this problem? It's because you're out of touch. The problem is GOVERNMENT, not business.
