The traditional party line is that all of the reports over the centuries of people being attacked by wolves have been lies. Wolves, you see, are afraid of men and there has never been a verified case where a man was attacked and killed by a wolf.

I've always considered that to be total BS.

And it is. read any first hand accounts (late 1700s to early 1800s) written about the Eastern Frontier and you will find wolf attacks. That is why our ancestors wiped them out.

"...there has never been a verified case where a man was attacked and killed by a wolf."

Of course, a fair number of people sent to verify the attacks have not returned, either...

A kayaker’s life-and-death struggle with a hungry wolf on B.C.’s remote north coast... has prompted a conservation officer to warn against taking wolf encounters too lightly.

“This was a predatory wolf attack,” conservation officer James Zucchelli confirmed in an interview from his Bella Coola Valley office. “That fellow was perceived as a prey source. He was attacked with intent to eat. The wolf saw him and took off running at him.”

the attack reinforces the fact that wolves are predators and capable of attacking humans ...

The book “White Fang” comes to mind.

Also, there was a pack of wolves that preyed upon young children in India. Saw the documentary on it a few years ago. The experts couldn’t figure out what was taking the children. Then they were shocked to trace it to a pack of wolves because, as the story goes, wolves are supposedly such timid creatures.

Why would a wolf be afraid of men?

Would it be our bad breath? Our cosmic auras? Or perhaps might it be that for a long time attacking an armed man was a sure way to be removed from the gene pool?

However, as wolves are discovering, humans in Canada are no longer habitually armed. Without weapons, humans are less dangerous to hunt than deer, don't run as fast, are less likely to notice a wolf until the wolf is on top of them. Hey, an easy meal

Humans, the other white meat

Actually the party line, to be exact, was "there has never been a documented case of a wolf killing a human in North America", because they couldn't say that about Europe which has plenty of documented evidence down through the centuries to prove wolves do attack humans and kill them.

This type of idiocy on their part shows how stupid they are and how stupid they think the average person is. Somehow we are to believe that American wolves are different in their prey selection than EU wolves.

The many accounts that Indians would tell about wolf attacks are discounted because, of course, they kept no written records so therefor their accounts are "undocumented". Americans, as you pointed out, are just considered to be liars when it comes to wolves.

The reason wolves were afraif of humans for many years was because they were shot and killed on sight but of course we can't kill them now so they have lost any fear of man, same is true of mountain lions, which attack people frequently. To predators we are just prey animals to be attacked and eaten.
