Senator Johnson to Seek a Third Term (Tim Johnson From South Dakota)
NY Times ^ | October 19, 2007, 2:02 pm | By David M. Herszenhorn

Senator Tim Johnson, the South Dakota Democrat who spent most of this year recovering from a brain hemorrhage, is running for re-election next year.

In a statement, Mr. Johnson, 61, said that he had planned to seek a third term before he became ill last December and remained committed to doing so. “I wanted to take this second chance at life and focus even harder on being the best advocate I can for the people of South Dakota,” he said. “Today, I am asking South Dakotans to give me the chance to give back to them by announcing that I will run for re-election in 2008.” Mr. Johnson, who made an emotional return to Capitol Hill last month, said that he was healthy enough to remain in office. “After months of rehabilitation and recovery, more than a month on the job in Washington and after my recent trips back to South Dakota it is clear, to my family, my doctors, and me that I am able to do the hard work required of a United States Senator,” he said.

Well, he couldn’t be any worse than the rest of them.

A brain damaged Senator, and this is news?

As a human being I wish him well.

I certainly hope he is able to function in his job, since being a democrat already means he has diminished mental functions.

It will be interesting to see if the people of S. Dakota think he can handle a re-election bid and properly represent their interests.

So far five Republicans have said they plan to retire after next year: Wayne Allard of Colorado, Larry E. Craig of Idaho, Pete V. Domenici of New Mexico, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska and John Warner of Virginia. No Democrats have announced that they will be stepping down.

Three RINO's and a Queer.

Has Johnson made any public appearances or statements since his stroke?

I don’t know whether he has made public statements or not. I can recall no public remarks, but this has not been front page news for some time.

The good news is that this makes for a (rare in 2008) vulnerable Democratic seat in the Senate--very vulnerable, in my opinion.

On the downside, it is hard to ignore the fact that a Republican with, say, a bad hangnail is continually hectored by the MSM to resign--immediately, if not sooner; whereas a Democrat who is unable to function normally is encouraged to hang on indefinitely.

Not to be cruel, but is he even out of his coma? Can he walk and talk? Has he made any public appearances?

It worked for Patsy Mink, why not Senator Braindead? I noticed he wasn’t around to sign Harry Reid’s letter about Rush.

I wonder if he'll agree to a debate with his opponents? That should be very telling.

I can hear the Dems now if the Republican calls for a debate:

"How DARE you challenge this poor man, after all he's been through? This is just another mean-spirited personal attack by the Party of Hate, picking on a man whose been out the hospital for less than a year..."

You just wait. This is what will happen.

We will miss Allard in Colorado. He is a class act and a consistent conservative voice on every issue.

Not nice to call him Braindead. We don't even know if he is brain damaged. And even if he were, he'd still be smarter than at least these senators-- Murray (WA)- still #1, Boxer (CA), Casey (PA), Carper (DE), Schumer (NY), McCaskill (MO) and Klobuchar (MN).

that I am able to do the hard work required of a United States Senator I dont think there is a senator who says attending meetings is hard work...that could out do an American Marine.. or let alone a construction worker. I for one do not believe that being a senator is hard physical work..

What is really sad is that the wussy Pubs will not even get an ex-Gov. or Lt. Gov. or some popular state rep. to even challenge Tim. This is pure nonsense. It is a GOP state and to just allow him to win because he was sickened, is just irrepsonsible. The Dems would never let a race like this one to go by default.
