Gorbachev Sets Up Russia Movement (Sole Committed Marxists In USA Alert)

The leader of the former Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev, has founded a new political movement in Russia.

Mr Gorbachev told the founding congress of the Union of Social-Democrats that its mission was to fight against "negative tendencies" and corruption.

He said it supported President Vladimir Putin's efforts to reform Russia.

The new movement will not take part in general elections in December, which are expected to be won by the United Russia party, backed by Mr Putin.

"We are fighting for power, but only for power over people's minds," Mr Gorbachev told the 200 delegates gathered in Moscow.

Among the issues the movement would focus on, he said, were lack of real political debate, pressure being put on non-governmental groups and high levels of corruption.

A statement said that "the potential for free democratic choice and political competition is being limited... This is why social-democrats are uniting to fight for the values of freedom and fairness."

The congress elected the 76-year-old as the movement's leader unopposed.

Mr Gorbachev's far-reaching reforms of the Soviet system accelerated the collapse of communism in the 1980s.

Mikhail Gorbachev no longer yearns for the hammer and sickle. This time, its the red rose. The former Communist has morphed into a Social Democrat. Lenin is turning over in his grave. His new movement wants to fight for pluralism, freedom, fairness and fighting corruption. Communism in Russia went out with the Berlin Wall and it ain't ever coming back. The irony is the world's sole committed Marxists are right here in the USA.

The irony is the world's sole committed Marxists are right here in the USA. That's right. There are many chinks in the communist armor these days. The trouble is, the Chinese are too busy making money; the Cubans are just decrepit, like a poor old diseased dog; and the North Koreans are just a pathetic cult. Your point that Marxism lives on only in America (to wit: the universities and professional America-hating causes) is well-taken.

Yes, especially in the Democratic Party that believes we can succeeded where the Soviets failed.

Gorbachev is not popular in Russia and no one believes the ideas he advocated most of his adult life. The fact is Russia is better off without the Soviet Union. Try telling that to the Marxists here at home who are the last true believers in collectivist ideology.

IMHO the whole world is better of without Soviet Union styled communism but that does not mean it is dead. The ideology still lives just sprouted up from the same stump under different names. Personally I think it is the nature a person is born with that causes them to need to used other humans as their pegs for protection and survival. Hard to let go of that lifestyle and certainly nothing free about the ideology.

Still I wonder did Gorbachev move out of the Presidio?

"Try telling that to the Marxists here at home who are the last true believers in collectivist ideology."

The antics of those black hooded creeps at Georgetown yesterday really drives that point home.

All in all I think the greatest cause for our own embrace of marxism is our public education system.

The only people who know the true horrors of communisim are dead or silenced, and the only people who really understand and appreciate our Constitution are those who use it to destroy us.

Did anyone ask Gorby if he ever removed Ronald Reagan’s boot from his rear end?

Sorry, but I don't see any evidence that the mass murderer Gorbachev has renounced his lifelong belief in Marxism. Communists have always claimed to be democratic, and democratic socialist "useful idiots" have always been supported by communists like Gorbachev as their wrecking ball to usher in communist dictatorship.

Haven't you ever heard of the "democratic people's republic" of Korea? You don't think they qualify as Marxists either?

Gorbachev believes that Russia achieved considerable progress thanks to President Vladimir Putin. - “When chaos reigned in the country, he used all means to stop the chaos. Now the country is embarking to a new path. It should not move back, but it should move towards democracy,” Gorbachev said.

"Democracy is the road to socialism." - Karl Marx

"The goal of socialism is communism." - V.I. Lenin

"More socialism means more democracy, openness and collectivism in everyday life." - Mikhail Gorbachev
