Mother and Daughter Fugitives Caught By Customs and Border Protection at Phoenix Airport

Phoenix – A mother and daughter, both wanted in Florida on charges of racketeering, were apprehended by alert U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Wednesday night.

While screening passengers arriving from Mexico City, CBP officers examined documents belonging to 24-year-old Silvana Theurell-Portillo. While asking routine questions of Theurell-Portillo, the officers queried her name in their systems and discovered that she was a fugitive, wanted in St. Lucie County, Fla. on gambling and racketeering charges.

During questioning of her mother, 65-year-old Marina Portillo, CBP officers discovered that she also was wanted on similar charges in Florida.

“In addition to our primary mission of anti-terrorism, protecting the nation from other threats, such as individuals attempting to flee from justice, is an important aspect of the CBP officer’s duties,” said Port Director Don Anderson, “Our officers do a fantastic job protecting the nation by arresting these fugitives from justice and taking them off the streets.”

Both women, Mexican citizens living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, were taken into custody by CBP officers and held until officers with the Phoenix Police Department arrived to take custody of them.

These apprehensions are a direct result of name queries performed during primary inspections, as well as CBP officers’ ability to follow through and investigate suspicions raised during questioning and inspections.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of the nation’s borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.

Everything sucks, but we got a new DFO and hopefully he’ll straighten out our Port Director! The NTEU has sent a team of lawyers out also.

We’re getting a new DFO too, at the end of the month. I kinda liked the old one, but we’ll see. She seems okay.

I must say I am surprised that they weren’t given orders to travel to Phoenix and turn themselves in.

I totally understand your feeling, and even agree, somewhat. I guess when a subject headline reads “Caught by Customs and Border Protection”, it is an understandable assumption.

The invasion of illegals problem is so huge and wide-spread - mostly on the southern border states. Some of us are personally affected by more than our tax-dollar.

It is too massive to even try to post, here. I do hope all FReepers read the articles carefully before posting.

The problem is not just the invasion - it is the lack of support from those who promised to protect us and our country. It is an overwhelming frustration - and I am sure words get posted with a feeling of despair (not intellectual reason) - by many.

Sounds like a sequel to “The Great Texas Dynamite Chase”.

When I’ve flown out of the Rio Grande Valley area of Texas (McAllen, Harlingen and Brownsville) I sometimes am asked (as are others) by Border Patrol agents if we are American citizens. I’m LEAVING the airport, not entering it. Why would anyone ever be truthful about saying they weren’t a citizen? If the agents have “probable cause” can they ask for proof of citizenship?

As usual, most automatically assume illegal.

Fact is, they were never illegally here!.

Since the warrant was from Florida, they were here before, now where does it say they were here legally that time.

A little Star Wars lingo.

That aside, you seem to think that CBP found these two by accident. Is that correct?

Given their stellar record how could think otherwise??

Because I know the processes on primary in the airport environment, as does the poster who created this thread.

These women were identified by the application of sound protocol by the airport inspectors.

It would be nice if they weren't ridiculed for doing their jobs.

They did! What do you think this thread was about?!

The inspectors are not to blame for the illegal immigration problem. Put your angst where it belongs, with the political leadership, not with the guys on the ground.

I’m so disgusted I can’t even think of a good retort.

Last word is yours, I’m out.
