One motorist drove through the roadblock about 11 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said.
A chase ensued, which ended when the man rammed the rear of a patrol car that had boxed him in to stop him, CHP Officer Brian Pennings said.
The motorist was booked on suspicion of evading a CHP officer, Pennings said. Neither was injured. About 100 residents were so fed up that by about noon, they pushed past the barrier, Pennings said.
“They all ran back, they got in their cars and they blew through,” he said.
National Guard troops were called in to stop others from getting the same idea, with about 10 soldiers carrying assault rifles standing beside CHP officers.
It was too much for residents such as Kahle. She said she probably won’t leave the next time there’s an order to evacuate.
“The only reason we left this one is my son is a firefighter and was down at the Harris fire, and I didn’t want to give him something else to worry about,” she said.
The waiting residents were frustrated because they heard others had been let back in.
