Putin is only pandering to the Russian nationalist voters he’ll need in order to carry his party to victory at the polls next year and be named PM. Behind the scenes the Russians and the US government are cooperating on unprecedented scales combatting terrorism. But, don’t get me wrong, I do not consider Putin our friend, we’re only “friends” when he needs us.

Yes, indeed...Vlad the terrible is providing cover for his power grab by playing the old "US imperialism" card. An old apparatchik can't resist the temptation to keep control, whilst fishing in troubled foreign waters.
