NEW YORK: Lou Dobbs, an anchorman for CNN, is furious, and he has his reasons.
He's not only upset that the governor of New York, Eliot Spitzer, is being "absolutely irresponsible" in a decision about giving driver's licenses to illegal immigrants. He also finds it an offense against nature and common sense that Spitzer has so far declined to appear on Dobbs's evening news program.
"The man hasn't shown the gumption to come on the air and debate the issue with me," The New York Times quotes Dobbs as saying.
Amazing - the temerity of "the man" not to come when Lou Dobbs calls! No wonder Dobbs accuses Spitzer of an "abuse of power."
Outside the borders of the United States, there surely are people who have never heard of Lou Dobbs, or Eliot Spitzer for that matter. For them, a few words of explanation:
Last month, the governor made one of those sensible but impolitic proposals that are particularly subject to demagogic and sensational attack. His idea was that since illegal immigrants are in New York in the hundreds of thousands anyway, and since there's no sign that the U.S. government is going to round them up and send them away, they might as well be allowed to get driver's licenses.
Spitzer maintained that several benefits would accrue from this, not least that the roads would be safer because there would be fewer unlicensed drivers (many of whom now leave the scene of accidents because they are afraid to have any contact with the police.)
Driver's licenses would also help the illegal aliens improve their economic situations - and there's no point in contriving to keep them desperately poor given that many of them work very hard at jobs that the rest of us don't want to do.

Because of course issuing a magic rectangular card to people who are bad at driving automatically makes them good at driving.
Not sure. Checking the links, this may be something a Richard Burnstein first had published in the NYT.
And able to vote (motor voter), and screwing the rest of the legal new yorkers out of their valid (and real-ID compliant) lisences...and much, much more...
it was an expansion of the original, for overseas consumption, and I woild assume, sympathy.....
Whatever it was, it’s garbage on behalf of Spitzer and his idiotic attempt to ram licensing down the throats of New York citizens.
As far as overseas consumption, perhaps we can ship both Spitzer and his illegal colleagues to wherever the Herald sees fit. Let them enjoy the apparent benefits of these people having licenses.
However, if Mr. Spitzer remains here in America, I’d say he needs to visit a woodpile.
“The man hasn’t shown the gumption to come on the air and debate the issue with me,”
Spitzer is smart. Dobbs is one of the few that would skip the grunting racism debate and go to the heart - asking Spitzer about his contacts with insurance lobbyists and transport business lobbyists who want to flood the market with labor to depress wages. They don’t pay money for nothing.
Who is this man (of whom I have never heard) to patronize Lou Dobbs?
Methinks the man played a bit fast and loose with Mr. Dobbs’ wording of his challenge to debate the mayor. I heard the challenge, and I don’t recall the attitude that this writer describes.
Bingo! (again)
Mr. Bernstein should explain to his foreign readers why we let people here illegally stay. I’m sure they find that curious.
Having heard the challenge, you would know better than I. I don't follow Lou Dobbs (CNN!). I know he's right on immigration, but that's not enough for me to turn the channel (those few times I watch TV) to CNN. If he began posting here on FR I'd pay attention (or, maybe, if he'd even switch to Fox News) :)
Ha! I toyed with the term ‘woodshed’ but took ‘woodpile’ instead. Maybe that’s my roots. We’ve used the term ‘pile’ in my family. I guess we didn’t keep our wood in sheds back then. :)
That’s what I’ve read on FR. You get what you pay for and the voters in New York have no one to blame but themselves. Hey! We have the same problem here in Illinois with Blago. No one likes him, but he was re-elected. What can I say.
how ‘bout them having Mexican licenses?
Driver’s licenses would also help the illegal aliens improve their economic situations - and there’s no point in contriving to keep them desperately poor given that many of them work very hard at jobs that the rest of us don’t want to do.
Trite and the end, but it’s the first time that I’ve heard the right accused of contriving to keep illegals “desperately poor”. Absurd. AND why is it incumbent upon us all to help illegal aliens improve their economic status? I wish them well, but not on the US dime.
His is the only show on CNN that I can stomach. Many of his interviews on illegal immigration and attacks on the middle class are posted on Phyllis Schlafly’s “The Eagle Forum”.
