A 37-year-old man bound for Albany to visit relatives managed to conceal three gunshot wounds and board a US Airways flight in Tampa, Fla., and fly to Charlotte, N.C., before anyone noticed his injuries.
William Notaro of Clearwater, Fla., was treated at a North Carolina hospital before eventually completing his trip to the Capital Region following the incident.
Marianne Pasha, public information coordinator with the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office in Florida, said Sunday night that investigators are trying to figure out the exact circumstances around the shooting.
Notaro told authorities he was shot three times by a woman during an argument at 3 a.m. Saturday in an apartment at the Windemere complex in Dunedin, Fla. Notaro has a Clearwater address.
But Pasha says that account and other information Notaro has given them is "at odds with other investigative information we've developed." She declined to be more specific.
"What it boils down to is that we know something happened, but the report from the victim is not matching the story from others in his company or those who know about the incident," Pasha said.
"We're trying to backtrack the whole thing ... and pursuing some other leads to find out what really happened."
Pinellas County sheriff's deputies interviewed Notaro by phone from Albany Sunday afternoon, Pasha said.
Notaro had to be removed from an aircraft leaving Charlotte Douglas International Airport when he was found to be bleeding, authorities said.
He had been shot with a small-caliber handgun, authorities added.
Pasha said authorities believe Notaro has family in Albany and that he has been living in Florida for less than a year.
Meanwhile, a man who answered the telephone at the Capital Region residence of William Notaro Sr. would not answer when asked if he knew the man who had been shot. The person on the other line then simply hung up.
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office is working with the airport police in Tampa Bay and Charlotte, Pasha said. She said more information would be available today.
Shot three times and he still manages to board an airliner?
Must be a Marine.
I wonder what kind of firearm was used. Either the assailant was a poor marksman or the caliber of pistol was pretty anemic. There’s something to be said for .45 JHP.
I thought airlines had a two shot limit prior to boarding.
Thats only for pilots
When I first saw the headline, I thought “man, airport security is really getting tough these days”.
Thanks Sherlock!
Only Northwest pilots.
Iron man?
