After seven years of suffering through the mangled articulations of President George W. Bush, and the juvenile, curiously incongruent attitude that has him joking at wartime press conferences, many in the GOP are looking for a savvy and articulate leader.
The Bush fatigue as it is commonly referred to is not simply confined to liberals and the international community. In candid moments most dedicated Republicans will admit to the palpable discomfort experienced by his own supporters while watching a Bush press conference.
Bushs failure to be able to effectively articulate even the simplest of positions has left his party and the Nation without an effective advocate on a host of critical issues. Indeed, even Bushs most impressive domestic achievement - an economy that has enjoyed nearly 6 years of uninterrupted growth is known by critics as the greatest story never told.
There is no doubt that the mainstream media has consistently opposed and undermined the President from day one, but given the proclivities of the press, this is entirely unsurprising. That a modern White House communications team could be this ineffective despite nearly seven years of practice and a press office once headed by someone with as much media experience as Tony Snow is further evidence of the centrality and importance of any presidents ability to articulate a clear vision.
Given this reality, and the real sense of fatigue, Fred Thompsons folksy demeanor and simplistic explanation of policy sound far too familiar to imbue him with the quality of competence or the sense of change that most voters are desperately seeking.
Indeed, Thompsons single best retort in Sundays debate came in response to a question about his own widely perceived laziness. While his supporters cheered him, the reality is that effective presidential campaigns are not won by playing defense.
Despite the hopes of many, Thompson is clearly outmatched by several of his articulate GOP rivals, and his country tune out of place with an audience itching for an effective voice for conservatism.

And Tim Russert will be the "moderator"... /grin
And it will be on MSNBC. At midnight. On a Tuesday.
Interesting article, good website
Effete Elites want one of their own.
whoop ass is not their cup of tea.
I am undecided still at this point. I’m waiting to see one of these candidates step up and show the type of leadership that will be needed for the next four to eight years. Run Paul is not among those who displays anything close to leadership.
... and we will still destroy her.
LLS
LOL I am so sick of the bs that is written.
Hmm, a clown who can't even spell "disease" correctly is calling others "stereotype southern white trash"?
lol, what epic fail. Silly MittWitt, internets are serious business.
Yes, Her Heinous will “re-define” debating by non-participation.
And the MSM will hail her ingenuity and original thought—right on cue.
Excellent point.
She will have them stammering within mere moments.
Neither Mitt nor Rudy have the fire that will be needed to combat Cankles. Nor the philosophical fortitude to do so.
Fred will be slow and sure. He’s saving the salvo for the proper moment.
Fred is running his own race, not doing what the pundits, who accomplish nothing in life, dictate he should be doing.
Nothing of substance, nothing about the issues, just the ramblings of 4 year olds performing below grade average.
People who have to post this way because either their candidate sees Fred or other conservatives as a danger, or they are here to divide and conquer.
What you have probably not noticed, is that by and large, Free Republic is populated with members who have mastered critical thinking, who are mature, and do perform at and above grade-level and therefore, for the most part, find your infantile posts humorous at best.
Given the quality of your posting skills and associated cognitive abilities, you may want to visit www.democraticeunderground.com just a few doors down. People of like character flaws frequent this site and actually feel fulfilled!
“many in the GOP are looking for a savvy and articulate leader.”
And some of us despise slick re-creations like Romney, and RINO’s like Rudy, and “mavericks” like McCain.
Sending Fred another check tomorrow, in fact.
2008 is going to be another one of those “silent majority” years. There’s an army of us out here who are hungry to hear the pro-American point of view and when our guy comes along we won’t care if he is ugly as sin, old as dirt and married more times than Liz.
He is here and his name is Fred.
He is not ugly, he is ruggedly rugged
He is not old he is seasoned and wise
Isn't two marriages about average these days?
Too folksy? I guess these folks like 'slick' much better. No thanks. Thompson is more conservative than the slick talkers.
The funny thing is, Fred is actually the most nuanced of the candidates, while at the same time being entirely plain spoken.
At the level of rhetoric, the 38 second devastation of Michael Moore is a perfect example—the double meaning of the closing “mental institution, something you might think about Michael” was absolutely delicious, and, well. . . nuanced. One can’t imagine any other the other candidates even attempting something like that, much less pulling it off.
At the level of substance, Thompson’s inistence on federalism as a guiding principle leads him to nuanced positions on a lot of social issues which would move the country in a conservative direction without the federal government uniformizing some conservative policy and enforcing it on the several states.
