I banned toy guns from my first son because I did not want him to think they were toys and give them respect.

He then made them from bristle blocks and legos and sticks. I learned a lesson about trying to limit imagination and that children were not as stupid as they looked. I didn’t ban the rest of the children from toy guns.

We used to have realistic-looking cap guns, complete with small charges of gunpowder to make loud noises. We'd run around and play cowboys and indians, police and crook, and just shoot each other for no reason. Then you couldn't get them anymore, and toy guns were evil. And yet more kids are shooting other kids now, then they did in my generation when we foolishly were allowed to play with realistic-looking guns.

BTW, there's a company called Brickgun that makes a limited quantity of "Lego Hand Guns", they are very realistic-looking, but somewhat fragile so it would be hard to run around playing with them. More for show than play.
