Dreams Crushed: The Bush administration vs. young immigrants
Washington Post ^ | 25 October 2007 | Editorial Staff

Posted on 10/25/2007 6:07:13 AM PDT by shrinkermd

IT WAS always a long shot for supporters of an immigration measure known as the Dream Act to round up the 60 votes needed to advance the bill in the Senate. But it didn't help matters yesterday when the Bush administration, having supported a comprehensive immigration reform bill containing essentially the same provision, came out against the bill on the morning of the vote. This helped quash the hopes of tens of thousands of promising young people who find themselves, through no fault of their own, in this country illegally. The failure of the Dream Act -- it got just 52 votes -- leaves them no realistic hope of achieving legal status.

...In its policy statement yesterday, the administration asserted that it was "sympathetic" to the plight of these young people but insisted that the measure "falls short" because it would create "a special path to citizenship that is unavailable to other prospective immigrants -- including young people whose parents respected the nation's immigration laws."

Last week SCHIPS had the age of a child at 25. The DREAM act had “children” as aliens under the age of 30.

Who the hell writes this crap?

I just got caught robbing a bank. The laws in this unforgiving country have now quashed my dreams of having a clean criminal record. I hate America! (/sarc)

I am SO fed up with the sob stories in the MSM for lawbreakers.

Why is it that some of us have to follow the laws, but others don’t?

Hey, I have a dream. I would like to leave the America I grew up to to my son. I would like to feel I belong in my own country. I would like people to understand me when I speak english. I would like to keep the money I earn rather than see it consumed by foreigners. I would like the countries that invade us with their throwaways to reciprocate the rights they demand here in their home countries -Mideast/Muslim Countries freedom of religion, Mexico/Canada, foreigners can buy and own property (yes even waterfront property), and China, freedom of speech. I have a dream dingyharry, nazipeelousi, mzhillary, et. al. You asshats better start listening or you may find yourself back in the minority pretty quickly.

I just don’t get this. Why the President’s turnaround? Was this bill not “comprehensive” enough? His response was a shock to me.

If illegal is now being ignored does that also extend to IRS issues and “illegal” bank withdrawals?

Illegal immigrants, young and old alike, have no greater friend in this country than G.W. Bush.

administration-backed comprehensive immigration reform measure, which failed earlier this year, also provided for special, expedited treatment of young people in this category. The administration had no problem with the provision then, and its complaints now seem as cowardly as they are unpersuasive.

It simply did not go FAR ENOUGH to satisfy Bush and his immigration cronies. Had it passed, the dims would have gotten "credit" with the pro illegal immigration crowd. Sen. "Spectre" has a new and improved "comprehensive" illegal immigration amnesty plan (backed by the White House) ready to be introduced to Congress.

tens of thousands of promising young people who find themselves, through no fault of their own, in this country illegally.

Then let these "promising" young people demonstrate said "promise," by voluntarily going through the established naturalization process -- what we silly old fuddy duddies sometimes refer to, nostalgically, as "The Law of the Land."
