Dreams Crushed: The Bush administration vs. young immigrants
Washington Post ^ | 25 October 2007 | Editorial Staff

Posted on 10/25/2007 6:07:13 AM PDT by shrinkermd

IT WAS always a long shot for supporters of an immigration measure known as the Dream Act to round up the 60 votes needed to advance the bill in the Senate. But it didn't help matters yesterday when the Bush administration, having supported a comprehensive immigration reform bill containing essentially the same provision, came out against the bill on the morning of the vote. This helped quash the hopes of tens of thousands of promising young people who find themselves, through no fault of their own, in this country illegally. The failure of the Dream Act -- it got just 52 votes -- leaves them no realistic hope of achieving legal status.

...In its policy statement yesterday, the administration asserted that it was "sympathetic" to the plight of these young people but insisted that the measure "falls short" because it would create "a special path to citizenship that is unavailable to other prospective immigrants -- including young people whose parents respected the nation's immigration laws."

All FReepers should keep our eyes open for the next night time attack trying to legalize illegals, the AgJobs bill, sneaking it's way through the senate.

Those bastards are just like snakes that hunt at night and go back to their holes during daylight.

Stay vigilant, the snakes will slither back.

In my book, this is called learning the “consequences” thru the fault of the parent. Consequences are good and necessary.

I just don’t get this. Why the President’s turnaround? Was this bill not “comprehensive” enough? His response was a shock to me.

the president saw what happened in the mid-term elections.

Journalistic malpractice.

These students could apply for a student visa.

Did the journalist mention the military aspect was added at the 11th hour to tack this as a “military amendment”?

Did the journalist mention the recreation of anchorbabies?

Not only do I whole-heartedly agree with this article, but I also think that all criminals who have children should be neither fined nor jailed.

It's for the children. How can we face ourselves if we crush the dreams of the innocent child who, through no fault of his own, has been supported by the income of his pimping or pushing father?

The poor children of Ponzi scheme operators or white-collar crooks! To deprive them of their polo ponies and country club memberships because, through no fault of their own, their father is a slimeball ...

At long last, have we no sense of shame?

No need to blame bush on this one...70% of Americans are against it...and for change...our elected officials actually listened to those who put them in office.

In this case... it’s NOT Bush’s fault.

Has President Bush listened?

Some kind of deal has been struck. Perhaps he wanted LOST passed in exchange, or something else.

Last week SCHIPS had the age of a child at 25. The DREAM act had “children” as aliens under the age of 30.

Doesn't that just define the liberal mindset? They see ALL of us as "children".

I don't think Bush has changed his mind about Open Borders but he's washed his hands off the problem.

The MSM is dishonest - it refuses to acknowledge the American people are overwhelmingly opposed to amnesty for illegals and want our borders secured, period.

The PROMISE of a free college education? Can they earn NOTHING for themselves? Do we the taxpayers have to fund every single wonderful gift for these free-loaders? Is there NO personal responsibility expected? Except of course for taxpayers.

Why doesn’t this jackanapes-writer fund someone, if he thinks it is such a good idea.

oh hellO.

The house just passed another steaming pile SCHIP bill today. The legislative effluvia is non-stop of late.

AgJobs is likely the next swipe at another amnesty bill.

LOST needs to be defeated as well. It's a wholesale loss of our sovereignty on the sea and an endless pot of gold to keep the socialist debaters society (UN) funded in perpetuity.
