I knew that Jesus was not born on December 25th. I've always heard that it was probably in the spring time, as that was when shepherds would have been tending their flocks at night (lamb birthing season).

From what I had heard, the early Christians did begin celebrating the birth at the same time as a pagan festival, as to not be caught as practicing Christians.

Emperor Constantine the first pontiff of the roman church codified paganism
into the newly created roman church by ordering the end of Pesach and the
introduction of the pagan celebration of Easter at the Council of Nicea.

Constantine also ordered the creation and celebration of "Christmas"
on the pagan feast of Mithras on December 25th.

Can Christmas & Easter Be Holy?
