It's pretty subtle - and not a very big deal - but you don't hear Protestants using the term Madonna much. They'd be more likely to title the same work of art "Jesus and Mary" or something like that. Subtle and minor, and moot, since it turns out the painting in question predates the Reformation.
Granted it has been a while, but back several years ago I remember hearing several country Baptist preachers mention Madonna in their sermons.
Perhaps contemporary protestants don't but most of them are ignorant of the teachings of people like Calvin, Luther, Zwingli, etc. on the Blessed Mother.
Oh, I see. So it was acceptable to use the word Madonna before the 1540’s but not after?
