In part Romney's challenge is to articulate a bigger message than sweeps some of these issues to the side. He has had many messages throughout the year -- competence, freshness, conservatism, a three-legged stool. Lately, because of the jumbled nature of the Republican race, he has been focused on persuading Republicans he is the true conservative.
But it is difficult to sum up exactly what his candidacy is based upon and exactly who he is. That's not the case for Giuliani, certainly, even though his conservative credentials are open to challenge because of his liberal views on abortion and gay rights.
So the issue raised about whether Romney wears well may be the critical question for the candidate and his advisers at this stage of the race. In many respects, he offers Republians an attractive package, and his record of success in the private sector speaks of someone with clear talents. But presidential campaigns are different.
Creating a bond of trust with voters is critical to success. Television ads can go part of the way in doing that, but presidential campaigns are too long and too personal for television alone to do the trick. If Romney wears as well as his advisers think he will, he could become the Republican nominee and a tough general election candidate. But there are some doubters out there who wonder whether he will.

Too late. He’s already been revealed as the fraud he really is.
Trying to distnguish who the “true conservative” is between Romney and Giuliani would be like trying to tell who’s the greater patriot, Harry Reid or John Murtha!
LOL!
Most apt comparison!
Classic!
Likely as genuine as the kinderhook plates.
The most important thing in politics is sincerity. If you can fake that, you’ve got it made. That’s Romney’s problem...he isn’t convincingly faking it yet.
Yep, Mitt needs to go to Bill Clinton’s school on how to win elections.
But that's it. Just call him Gumby Romney.
There's another thread this morning about Romney cracking down on some immigration laws in MA while working MA to become an open state to illegal immigrants.
Romney was against legal fake marriage ("gay marriage") while being for legal fake marriage (civil unions and dometic partnerships).
Romney underwent a pro-life "conversion" in Nov 04 only to be forcefully "pro-choice" at a press conference in May 05.
In '94 in 2 back-to-back sentences, Romney spoke about the rights of the Boy Scouts of America to determine its own policy, and in the very next breath say that the Boy Scouts should be open to people of any "sexual orientation."
Romney was twice endorsed by the Log Cabin Club of MA only now to have ads run against him by the Log Cabin Club.
Romney was in favor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act before he was 'agin' it.
Romney came alongside Catholic social services to help them keep homosexuals from adopting thru their agency before telling them that "No...can't help you."
Romney was in favor of embryonic stem cell research and then underwent a "conversion." He was in favor of Roe until he was against it.
Hey, you take enough stances...then if you really do twist the apostle Paul's words as "being all things to all men" in this manner, you, too, can be a political gumby!
Romney does this well in person. It is part of the reason why he does well in the early states he has been in. The real question is if he can do it on a National level. He is the one candidate who is rising in many early states.
Glen Beck summed it up a lot more simply - Guliani sounds good too many people until they get to know him and his policies then they really dislike him. Romney has the opposite problem to overcome. Once people get to know him they like him more.
"He's been a pro-life Mormon faking it as a pro-choice friendly," Romney adviser Mike Murphy told the National Review in 2006.
Romney ran for US Senate in 1994 pledging to keep abortion ''safe and legal in this country." As a 2002 candidate for governor, Romney said he would not change the state's abortion laws. But in recent months, he has described himself as ''personally prolife" to out-of-town political audiences.
Mitt Fakes a Pro Choice Stance
THE REAL ROMNEY?
Fake Badges used by Romney Aide
Fake Web Site about Fred Thompson
An executive is responsible for the actions of those they manage.
An executive sets the ethical tone and level of permissiveness of his organization.
What tone does Mitt Romney set?
Look at the links above. They should make anyone wonder what exactly is going on here, these people involved in the incidents in the links were campaign and marketing professionals, not some bunch of college kids pulling pranks. So it can only be two things.
Either one, the people involved in both incidents thought this would be ok with Romney, so they had to get that idea from somewhere or two, they did not think about it at all and are grossly incompetent at their jobs, again not a great reflection on the consummate executive professional.
FAKE BADGES + FAKE WEB SITE + FAKE STANCES = THE REAL ROMNEY?
He is also prone to “reversals” on his “Conservative” bonafides...
Don’t forget the main thing you have against Romney: his religion.
Face it, that is your number one issue.
