Putin Compares U.S. Missile Shield to Cuban Crisis
Reuters ^ | 10/26/2007 | Reuters

Russia's President Vladimir Putin drew a parallel on Friday between U.S. plans for a missile shield in Europe and the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, widely regarded as the closest the world came to nuclear war.

"I would remind you how relations were developing in an analogous situation in the middle of the 1960s," he said when asked at a news conference about Washington's plans to station elements of a missile defense shield in eastern Europe.

Putin needs to look up the difference between "defensive missiles" and "offensive missiles".

Putin needs to install his own Star Wars shield if he doesn’t like this one. And, he needs to widen his reading now that he has finished reading the Potter series.

Uh, puty, there is a big difference between staging nukes a few miles off of someone’s coast line and putting up a defensive shield hundreds of miles from one’s border.

I wonder if russia is about to go offensive.

A few times recently I’ve pointed out Putin desperately wants a return to the bad old ‘glory days’ of the Soviet Union here at FR.

And I’ve gotten quite a few replies telling me in short thats just ‘nonsense’.

Here’s another example of why I view Putin as I do.

There will be more as time passes, and we won’t see a single article that demonstrates my view is wrong, just ‘theory’.

Actions speak louder than words, folks. Putin’s actions show him to be exactly as I have portrayed him to date.

I don’t disagree with you at all on the attempts to do a Soviet Reborn thing by Putin and his puffers.

The KGB never went away. It just changed names and went to a “for profit” business model.

More and more people are waking up to this obvious fact, forced in many instances by Putins own words and actions.

I think alot of us that were alive to remember ‘duck and cover’ as children (My generation was the last to be so trained in elementary schools) simply didn’t want to relive the memory of that time, and its implications.

Because of this, they’ve cut the guy way to much slack, despite the growing mounds of evidence to the contrary.

“Putin desperately wants a return to the bad old ‘glory days’ of the Soviet Union”

I’d say it is not quite openly a fait accompli......it was inevitable beginning on Jan 21, 1993......and will be widely recognizable before Jan 19, 2009, probably with some “WOT” NUKE and OIL type peripheral matters.

This is the same bastard that was hob-nobbing with the Iranians last week, just as friendly as can be. Suck it, Putin.

Attack Iran and you attack Russia
By Pepe Escobar

The barely reported highlight of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Tehran for the Caspian Sea summit last week was a key face-to-face meeting with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

A high-level diplomatic source in Tehran tells Asia Times Online that essentially Putin and the Supreme Leader have agreed on a plan to nullify the George W Bush administration’s relentless drive towards launching a preemptive attack, perhaps a tactical nuclear strike, against Iran. An American attack on Iran will be viewed by Moscow as an attack on Russia......snipped

All of Putin’s saber rattling is getting old. I wonder what the people of his country think of his antics as of late.

Yes, other than "missiles". There isn't really anything similar. They were putting nuclear tipped offensive missiles in Cuba. We're putting non-nuclear interceptors hundreds of miles away.

It's just something for them to bellyache about, as our system isn't really of any use in defending against the Russian nuclear arsenal.

"I would remind you how relations were developing in an analogous situation in the middle of the 1960s,"

Vlad's been drinking Ahmanutjob's Kool-Aid. Conventionally armed (or even non-armed kinetic) defensive missiles are just like medium range nuclear armed ballistic missiles? Except for the fact that the former saves lives while the latter ends them. Putin is a puddin' head.
