DES MOINES Republican presidential candidates made pitches Saturday to the largest gathering of Iowa party activists before the Jan. 3 caucuses.
Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter, Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo and John Cox spoke to an audience of about 625 at the annual Ronald Reagan dinner.
I came here because I value Iowa, I value the caucuses and I value the party, said Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor.
He called for an aggressive stance against Islamic extremism and a ban on abortion.
Thompson, a former U.S. senator from Tennessee, spoke about the need for limited government and fiscal restraint. He also called for a cutoff of federal funds to cities and states that ignore immigration laws.
Its our obligation to take the greatest country in the history of the world and make sure it stays that way, Thompson said.
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was not present, but he appeared in a video message. U.S. John McCain and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani did not attend.
The $100-per-ticket dinner was held at a Des Moines convention center, with audience members seated at candle-lit tables on a shiny concrete floor. People in the back had to rely on two giant video screens to get a good look at the speakers.
Most of the candidates focused on the positive. One of the exceptions was Paul, a Texas congressman, who said the party has lost its way on foreign policy. He opposes the Iraq war.
Why not have a humble foreign policy? Why dont we stay out of nation building? Paul asked.
Tancredo, a Colorado congressman, was one of several candidates who called on Republicans to reject the moderate wing of the party.
When conservatives run on principles we win. When we run away from principles, we lose, he said.
In contrast to the calls for conservative orthodoxy, top Iowa Republicans said the party needs to be inclusive. U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron, said conservatives and moderates must work together.
I think both sides need to realize we dont have a governing coalition if we cant marry ourselves together, he said.

Tancredo is right. Moderates ruin our chances. I have more respect for liberals than I do for moderates. At least they believe in something, however wrong they might be.

I agree! The moderates of the Republican party are running us left. I see little difference between the moderates and dem’s these days.
If the Republican moderates shift us left and the dem’s shift farther left, we wont have a GOP. We will have democrats and socialists.
This election it is crucial to elect a strong conservative. So far I only see one. Duncan Hunter!

The black out continues. 6 candidates attend and 2 are not mentioned other than in the attendance record. 3 "top tier" candidates did NOT attend but received more print than the aforementioned two.

As usual, Steve King speaks wisdom. He gets it. This is a unique man.
To: ConservativeMind
Steve King is one of the most consistent conservatives, standing up for conservative principles you can find. He understands we cannot win anything if we are fractured. It sounds so nice to claim that we don’t need RINOS but the fact is that without RINOS, the numbers aren’t there.
To: Conservativegreatgrandma
Then let’s get the Democrats involved, too. We can just as easily say we need their votes.
To: ConservativeMind
Sounds good. I’m all for it.
