Just 10 months into his first term in elected office, James Webb found himself on the podium for one of the most coveted speaking slots in Democratic politics.
The freshman senator from Virginia delivered the keynote address to the New Hampshire Democratic Party at its annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner a week ago, a role that in recent years has been played by current and former White House candidates John Edwards and John Kerry. Two years ago the speech was delivered by Sen. Evan Bayh, who is viewed as a potential vice presidential pick next year....
Direct and withering when talking about war, Webb can be awkward when the subject turns to his political ambitions -- particularly the vice presidential chatter that erupted shortly after he took office in January.
"This is like the conundrum -- there's no good answer," Webb said, laughing nervously. "I'm not in any way actively interested in doing that. Nobody is asking me about it, either."
Webb's political appeal is based on the fact that the combat veteran, acclaimed novelist and former Republican figured out how to unlock a conservative state with an antiwar populism that spoke to small-town and rural voters as well as the Democratic base. As Democrats seek to widen their majorities in Congress next year, Webb is much in demand as a fundraiser and campaigner...
Observers are divided on whether Webb's bluntness will be an asset or a disqualifier when the eventual Democratic nominee picks a running mate.
"Nobody can remember a freshman making the national impact he's made on his party," said University of Virginia political scientist Larry Sabato.
Presidential scholar Stephen Hess said, "At this point, where it's 100% speculation, there's nothing wrong with putting his name on the list." But he added: "He's an unguided missile. He'd be too unpredictable."

The MSM wouldn't have an unkind word to say, but it's not gonna happen.
“He’s an unguided missile. He’d be too unpredictable.”
Absolutely; he would be competing with Her Highness for available oxygen. Never happen.
VA has to be considered a tossup state and that filthy Webb’s presence on the ticket could tip the balance.Assuming that there are no states that we lost in ‘04 that we could win next year we can’t afford to lose a single state that we took in ‘04.
Basing it on his book I figure what the hell the more perverts in the White House the better.
It sure didn't help Kerry.
This turd should not be in the Senate let alone the White House.
One would think that his having written in his "novels" of underage boys performing unnatural sexual acts would turn many voters off in swing states.
I know this is just what I would want.. a VP that writes queer, child porn. Yep, that’ll work just fine.
Webb is flippin’ cornball, to be blunt, the man is a loon.
And there is a open VA Sen seat this cycle as well as Warner is retiring.
VA will be a really hot state in 2008.
The pundits claim it's a tossup state but I disagree. It will take a miracle for Hillary to carry Virginia.
Hillary will never pick Webb.
Strange things happen, like a very popular sitting Senator losing to a loose cannon. But, agree w/you, Webb won’t be on the ticket.
He has got to be one of the most pompous, arrogant people in today's political scene.
No wonder Hillary likes him.
James Webb ....
Can add some testosterone to the Donk ticket
His son is or was in Iraq
Webb comes from military family
Webb wrote a good book, I read it
“Born Fighting: How the Scots-Irish Shaped America,”
How could a Hillary ticket need more testosterone?
You have a point there
I think it would have more stones than Clinton/Gore ever did.
(1) It is in the WaPo. They like long articles on the front page.
(2) It should be something sorta new. And almost everything imaginable has been written about.
(3) Shalaigh Murray simply posits something no one else has taken seriously before. (With reason.)
(4) She makes the front page.
Webb is a arrogant child with only one legal parent. To bad they don’t have George Allen instead.
Agree - personally think she will pick the 'teddy bear', Richardson for his 'Hispanic' roots - and a man who will wear her 'shoe prints' well and easily. . .
