Oppression: The U.S. embargo on Cuba has many artists in a snit. Doesn't that crude cowboy George Bush understand that art transcends mere politics? Unfortunately for those who hold such beliefs, that's not true.
Alicia Alonso, the 85-year-old Cuban ballet legend, is the latest critic to call for an end to America's boycott of Cuban artistry. President Bush's recent tightening of sanctions, she huffed last week, amounted to an "inhuman and unjustifiable siege."
Actually, the only thing that's "inhuman and unjustifiable" in this debate is the Castro regime itself — and its flagrant violation of human rights, including the freedom of artistic expression. Alonso's remarks reveal the nasty reality of Castro's socialist caste system — and the grotesque inequalities it spawns.
The prima ballerina became famous for dancing "Giselle" with the American Ballet Theater in the 1940s and 1950s. After Castro's violent takeover in 1959, she opted to return to her homeland.
Today, she's a privileged member of Cuba's communist elite. She lives in a nice home, wears stylish clothes, travels the world and eats decent food. Average Cubans, by contrast, lead pinched lives as little more than slaves of the state.
