IAEA Chief Lashes Out Over Israeli Raid in Syria

UN nuclear chief Mohamed ElBaradei Sunday accused the Israelis of taking "the law into their own hands" with a mysterious raid on Syria last month and demanded more information about what was hit.

Neither Israel nor the United States has furnished "any evidence at all" to prove that the Syrian site bombed in early September was a secret nuclear facility, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency told CNN.

"That to me is very distressful because we have a system: if countries have information that the country is working on a nuclear-related program, they should come to us. We have the authority to go out and investigate," he said. "But to bomb first and then ask questions later, I think it undermines the system and it doesn't lead to any solution to any suspicion, because we are the eyes and ears of the international community."

Israel has said it bombed a military target inside Syria on September 6 but has provided no more details, amid speculation that the target may have been a site storing nuclear materials from North Korea.

ElBaradei said he had been told by Syria that the site was a military facility and "has nothing to do with nuclear." "And I would hope if anybody has information, before they take the law into their own hands, to come and pass the information on," he said.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has meanwhile acknowledged that Israeli warplanes may have violated Turkey's air space during the incursion into Syria, an official said Sunday.

Olmert apologized to his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan when the two men met in London on Tuesday, the Israeli official said.

Turkey had demanded an explanation from Israel after it was embarrassed by the discovery of jettisoned fuel tanks

And this is the guy whose credibility in his emphatic certitude that there is no evidence that Iran has an active nuclear weapons program is supposed to mean a damn thing to us?

Mohammed ElBaradei has no credibility in the matter of Muslim nuclear proliferation. None. He is an Egyptian married to an Iranian. His actions or lack thereof have demonstrated that he is for nuclear proliferation among Muslim states. How he stays on in his job and received the Nobel Peace Prize is one of life’s enduring mysteries.

Mosques, schools, hospitals, females, and children were targeted. Al Jezeera said so.

if countries have information that the country is working on a nuclear-related program, they should come to us.

So the IAEA can waste time fumbling around while the country in question has time to dismantle or hide any evidence.

Hey ElBaradei ... you undermined the system long ago and have a history of protecting those rogue countries seeking nukes ... which is why others have taken matters into their own hands

"And I would hope if anybody has information, before they take the law into their own hands, to come and pass the information on," he said.

So we can have another Iran ... negotiating with this putz endlessly while assembling the personnel and equipment to accomplish their mission of building their bombs.

This guy might be the single biggest cause of the death of the UN. When Iran pops up with a bomb one day soon, it'll put the stake in the heart of all the "negotiation" blather and nonsense the UN has been pushing all these years and show just how worthless all the sanctions and the people who push them really are.

The first thing to die when a muslim is appointed to a position of power is the truth.

Any chance of the Israeli jets reaching the UN building in New York? The pilots could bail out and I’d help hide them and smuggle them back. My Jewish aunt lives in Long Island, and has a daughter and he could stay for dinner at their place, and they could talk....

No surprise - he’s Muslim. Muslims ALWAYS support other Muslims in ANY war with non-Muslims. Its part of his religion and a good reason why we should pull out of the U.N.
