LOS ANGELES — Robert Goulet, the handsome, big-voiced baritone whose Broadway debut in "Camelot" launched an award-winning stage and recording career, has died. He was 73.

The singer died Tuesday morning in a Los Angeles hospital while awaiting a lung transplant, said a Goulet spokesman in an e-mail.

He had been awaiting a lung transplant at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after being diagnosed with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis in September.

There is a really nice (yet brief) piece on Goulet’s passing on HollywoodGrind (www.hollywoodgrind.com). The photo has the American Flag behind him. As celeb sites go, HG is one of the better ones (whoever writes their copy smacks down the anti-troop Hollywood celebs...that is why I go there first for my trashy news...to give them the hits.)

New Englanders have some fond 1960’s memories of Mr. Goulet as well. Who could ever forget the world heavyweight championship fight in Lewiston, Maine. This is the fight where Cassius Clay, later known as Muhammed Ali, knocked out the heavily favored champ, Sonny Liston, with an invisible punch one minute into the first round. Anyway, Robert sang the National Anthem a few minutes earlier that evening and promptly forgot the words. Everyone else took this momentary lapse in stride and Robert, himself often smiled at the memory.

The other fond memory has to with our beloved Red Sox. The great number 8, Carl Yastrzemski led the Beantowners from 7th place in 1966 to a 1967 pennant on the last day of the season. Robert’s Impossible Dream was quickly adopted as the Red Sox theme song for that impossible dream season. No Red Sox fan over the age of 50 could ever listen to Robert’s version of that great song without thinking pleasant thoughts about the Red Sox, Yaz, and Robert Goulet. God Bless Robert Goulet for his wonderful talent and for all the memories.

“Actually, he didn’t. But that is a rather crude comment to make. He didn’t have any connection to her AFAIK. Your basis for being so nasty?”

She married him, and financially raped him. My Uncle represented him. Screw you!

"Steve and Eydie are still married."

Still alive for real?

They should both be buried just on suspicion...

Speaking of which, why did Elvis shoot holes in his TV when Goulet appeared?

[Is] Elliot Spitzer [the third to die]?

I'd call you an optimist, but ES is one of Rove's greatest accomplishments, just below Ralph Nader.

One of the weirdest experiences of my life was going to the Grand Ol' Opry and sitting in the second row, having Porter Waggoner look me dead in the eyes and sing to me.

You are certifiable. She was NEVER married to RG, at least according to her IMDB biography and his IMDB bio. She was married to Mr. Andy Williams, also a fine singer.

SCREW YOU!

Idiot!

You may apologise now.

If ever I would leave you
It wouldn’t be in summer.
Seeing you in summer I never would go.
Your hair streaked with sun-light,
Your lips red as flame,
Your face witha lustre
that puts gold to shame!

But if I’d ever leave you,
It couldn’t be in autumn.
How I’d leave in autumn I never will know.
I’ve seen how you sparkle
When fall nips the air.
I know you in autumn
And I must be there.

And could I leave you
running merrily through the snow?
Or on a wintry evening
when you catch the fire’s glow?

If ever I would leave you,
How could it be in spring-time?
Knowing how in spring I’m bewitched by you so?
Oh, no! not in spring-time!
Summer, winter or fall!
No, never could I leave you at all!

Listening to his DVD with tears as I post this...

Bye Bob, you will be missed but not forgotten!

Dude, we gotta think fast of a new butt of our jokes. John Davidson? Nobody remembers him. Kenny G’s instrumental. There is no one now like Robert Goulet, true!

There are so many songs that he sang with his special touch...

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I’ll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I’m laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

and...

Call me irresponsible - call me unreliable
Throw in undependable too
Do my foolish alibis bore you
Well I’m not too clever - I just adore you

Call me unpredictable - tell me I’m impractical
Rainbows I’m inclined to pursue
Call me irresponsible - yes I’m unreliable
But it’s undeniably true - I’m irresponsibly mad for you

and...

Call me irresponsible - call me unreliable
Throw in undependable too
Do my foolish alibis bore you
Well I’m not too clever - I just adore you

Call me unpredictable - tell me I’m impractical
Rainbows I’m inclined to pursue
Call me irresponsible - yes I’m unreliable
But it’s undeniably true - I’m irresponsibly mad for you

and...

What kind of fool am I, who never fell in love?
It seems that I’m the only one I have been thinking of.
What kind of man is this? An empty shell, a lonely cell
In which an empty heart must dwell?
What kind of lips are these that lied with every kiss?
That whispered empty words of love that left me alone like this?
Why can’t I fall in love like any other man?
And maybe then I’ll know what kind of fool I am.
What kind of clown am I? What do I know of life?
Why can’t I cast away the mask of play and live my life?
Why can’t I fall in love, till I don’t give a damn?
And maybe I’ll know what kind of fool I am.

The list goes on and on...
