Dole Gets New Democratic Challenger (NC Senate race)
CBS News ^ | October 30, 2007 | Josh Kraushaar

North Carolina state senator Kay Hagan (D) has decided to challenge Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-N.C.) after announcing earlier in the month that she would not be running.

“To make a difference in North Carolina, we need change in Washington," Hagan said in a video statement on her website. "We need a Senator to make our voice heard. We need a Senator who will stand up, lead and make a difference. That's what I've done, and it's what I'm going to keep doing in Washington."

In her online announcement, she said she supported “ending the war in Iraq” so the money could be invested “back here at home.”

Hagan, whose state Senate district covers Greensboro, enters the race as a major underdog. Party officials had attempted to court several other Democrats, including Gov. Mike Easley (D-N.C) and Rep. Brad Miller (D-N.C.), with higher name recognition.

Hagan said earlier in the month that she didn’t plan on running, but changed her mind as other potential candidates opted not to run. She will be facing investment banker Jim Neal in the Democratic primary.

A poll conducted in late-September by Elon University shows Dole in strong shape for re-election. Fifty-percent of voters said they approved of Dole’s performance in office, while only 25 percent disapproved.

I think that Kay Hagan can make a respectable race of it. Two female officeholders running against each other, combined with media bias and Elizabeth Dole’s celebrity, could garner Hagan some free press that most challengers woudln’t get.

Just shows the Democrats racial side is showing. The male opponent is gay.

You saw how fast the Dem’s got a new challenge once Neal confirmed he was gay.

NC needs a new Helms. Dole is a disappointment. She votes right but she lacks ideas and isn’t a leader.

Most of the Blacks won’t vote for a gay NE businessman (yankee carpet-bagger): I agree with them! Good for them.

Hagan will still loose, but at least North Carolina won’t end up looking like MA or NY anytime soon..at least outside of Charlotte..!

Guess she is doing a GREAT job, I forgot she was a Senator.
Like RL says when they aren’t working we are ahead.

Chapel Hill and that area looks like the northeast.

I’m no fan of Dole after what she did to Steve Laffey in 2006, but at least she votes correctly most of the time.

Dole will lose, she’s your typical Republican supporting the same-old same-old.

She was probably for amnesty until she put her thumb in the wind and realized the people were against it.

The only way Liddy Dole loses is if Hillary actually carries the Tarheel state next year. I donated to Dole in 2002. I have not received any fundraising letters from her. But I have received plenty of fundraising letter from Richard Burr and Mel Martinez.

Dole's lifetime ACU rating is 91 and the last two years it has been 96. Her voting record is what is important. We have leaders. We need more followers.

***NC needs a new Helms.***

Won’t happen if Giuliani is President. The side effect of a Giuliani White HOuse would be RINO operatives running the RNC who will insist on running other RINOs in reliabe GOP districts.
