That is a false statement. Romney never supported McCain-Kennedy.
In 2005, before that bill came out, he said that the attempts by Bush and others to be doing something about illegal aliens was ‘reasonable’ but that was before the details of the Senate bill were out. at the time he also said he was against amnesty, ie a special path to citizenship, which he has consistently maintained. He was against McCain-Kennedy when it came out, in particular the blanket Z-visa for 12 million , and has been consistently against bills that include such amnesty for illegal aliens. He is for greater enforcement and has suggested that attrition through enforcement and ending the attraction of anchor babies would help the situation.
At the same time he has said that he favors legal, not illegal immigration, especially wanting to continue to attract ‘best and brightest’ from other countries.
