PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A police officer shot in the head during a robbery in a doughnut shop died Thursday morning, the police commissioner said, and his killer remained at large. He was the third city officer shot in the span of four days.
Officer Charles Cassidy walked in on a robbery and was shot in the forehead, police officials say.
Charles Cassidy, 54, was shot in the forehead Wednesday at a Dunkin' Donuts when a hooded robber spun from the counter and fired at him as he walked in the door, according to an employee.
The 25-year police veteran died at 9:40 a.m. Thursday at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said.
"This is a sad day for the city of Philadelphia," Johnson said.
The gunman went into the shop and demanded money just before Cassidy opened the door, according to witnesses.

25 years of dedicated service snuffed out by a scumbag.
Well, you don’t usually assume a donut shop will be robbed.
Prayers for Officer Cassidy.
Really thought the 10,000 black men (no whites allowed) da mayor of Philly said he was going to put in the streets would have prevented this. When are we ever going to force the self-ordained urban underclass to abide by the laws that govern the rest of us?
I don’t know Philly at all, so I must ask: Will the suspect be filled with bullets as soon as they find him, or will he actually make it to the stn house for booking...?
“Well, you dont usually assume a donut shop will be robbed.” .................. Did this happen in South Philly? If yes, assume it will be robbed.
Unless things really changed since I left that area, my guess would be North or West Philly.
I believe it was a donut shop on North Broad Street. Translation: North Philly
sorry, I didn't see the street name, otherwise, yes, North Philly.
I lived in Philly (center city) several years ago, when I was still wet behind the ears.
I live in a much safer place now. ;-)
Prayers up for Officer Cassidy and his loved ones.
Please send some South Jersey beefsteak tomatoes down here to Florida next year :)
You have to wait until July but they are the best tomatoes in the world.
yes, and the sweet silver queen corn also
Don't get me started on Camden.
“I live in a much safer place now. ;-)”
I live near Philly and its become a murder capital.
I cited the statistics not long ago when a lib was spouting how many soldiers were killed in Iraq, then asked them if the shouldnt be calling the Dem Mayor and complaining and protesting to him.
The Mayor then in all his wisdom (cough), on the day that Officer Cassidy was shot, gave a press conference in which he said the reason for the breakdown was the lack of money for services due to all our funds going to Iraq. Of course it had nothing to do with him or his lack of leadership.
Officer Cassidy was the third cop to be shot in four days.
Thankfully Street will be out of there soon.
I actually work in Camden (I live in Voorhees) and it is a pit. However, I feel safer in Camden than I do in my old neighborhood in Southwest Philadelphia. 65th & Kingsessing which is one block from my old house looks like some bombed out town from World War II and it is completely unsafe to stop for a red light there. I never go back through my old neighborhood anymore.
Camden has the highest violent crime rate of any city in the US. Trenton, which is immediately to the south of where I live (Lawrenceville) is a pit, but Camden might as well be Port Au Prince.
I was down in Cherry Hill for the first time in over 10 years. The level of traffic there was sickening. Seemingly a safe area, although the Fort Dix six lived there.
