Brit Jumps Barbed Wire At Metro Airport

POSTED: 1:37 pm EDT November 1, 2007
UPDATED: 2:37 pm EDT November 1, 2007

ROMULUS, Mich. -- A British citizen who apparently missed his flight Wednesday night decided to try a different tactic to catch a plane: He ran across all lanes of I-94, through a field, across railroad tracks and over six strands of barbed wire before his attempt was put to a final halt by an airport security guard who tackled the man and sat on him.

The 22-year-old is now in custody while police and airport officials try to figure out what he was up to.

Meanwhile, police dogs were at the scene making sure the area was cleared of any possible threat.

Police said the man had been staying the night at the nearby La Quinta Inn on Merriman Road because he had missed his Wednesday flight.

At around 9:30 a.m., waving a white towel, the man apparently ran from the hotel and onto I-94, where he was almost struck a couple of times, witnesses said.

The barbed wire atop the fence surrounding the airfield apparently did not deter the man, nor did the numerous cuts he received while climbing over the six-layer-thick wire.

By the time he was tackled and apprehended, he had many cuts and bruises, which were treated by emergency medical technicians at the scene.

Officials said the man did not appear to be drunk, and he is receiving a psychological evaluation while in custody.

If only he had been on US Aiways he would have had no problem. They are always late.

Why was my first reaction to think that this was about Brit Hume?

An example of emotional distress overiding intelligence!

His first mistake was not staying at a Holiday Inn :)

I can understand the guy's frustration. Running across an interstate is a bad move, but there are times you might have to do it, certainly don't recommend it as I've seen one casualty from that. Probably a stupid move in this case but understandable.

If his story is true and reported correctly, a psychological evaluation? Geez. Yeah, I guess so knowing security is what it is now. Like the time I ran frantically with my dog at SF airport to the cargo area, a long ways, because I had to get him on that flight. We would have had to drive 60 miles and back again if we missed it.

I can just see a security guard tackling me and my dangerous dog. But 6 layers of barbed wire is a bit much. I have tried to climb 3 or 4 layers, too, just to see what it was like, no ulterior motive, just wondered if I could do it, think it was a football stadium. I was deterred.

But then I frequently climbed over barbed wire on the farm when I was young and agile and thought nothing of it. I suppose I got a few scratches and bruises. Big deal.

Nah, Colorado Rockies fan ... the whole stadium was waving them at the Red Sox the whole time the Rockies were losing.

Hey, who can blame the guy. He was trying to escape the communist nation of Detroit.
