RALEIGH --The highest ranking elected woman in U.S. history visited North Carolina Friday. U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was at Meredith College in Raleigh for the College's Presidential Lecture Series.
An hour and a half before Speaker Pelosi arrived, hundreds of people lined up waiting to hear her speak.
"She has a very difficult job and I think she's doing a great job of it though," said Gail Christensen, a Pelosi supporter.
"Nancy Pelosi is one of the most important women in the world right now in one of the highest positions in the world," added Ashton Creasy, a junior at Meredith College.
In her speech, Speaker Pelosi hit a number of topics from education to energy. She also admitted her disappointment over the failure to end the war in Iraq, but she said she will not give up.
"Next week we will be presenting to Congress another proposal to go to the president's desk that says any funding on the war must be used for a purpose, a limited purpose of protecting our embassy, fighting the terrorists and limited training for Iraqi forces," explained Speaker Pelosi.
That resolution would also bring nearly all the troops home by the end of next year.
While having the U.S. Speaker of the House on campus was exciting enough for the students, the fact that it's an all female campus and Pelosi is the first female in that position means even more.
"I think that represents our college pretty well having her come to speak to us and it's cool she's a pretty high woman in Congress," noted Courtney Jones, a junior at Meredith College.
"It's kind of like I could do that some day," Creasy added. "We don't have to be housewives anymore; we can do anything."
That was Speaker Pelosi's message to the young women:
"I think a woman attaining this high office gave people not only a belief in the beauty of their dreams but a belief that anything could happen," Speaker Pelosi said.
Speaker Pelosi has represented the eighth district in California since 1987.

Read the comments from the students. I hope they’re all good-lookin’ enough to find husbands, cuz they ain’t smart enough to do anything in the workplace!
Vote your vaginas, girls!
I sincerely hope this election for President does not hang on the gender vote, looks like hillary is pinning her hopes on it.
Single ORGAN voters..
Post Of The Day!
Dear Gailsy, As you wander through life, try to occasionally ground your little thoughts in a fact or two. Even her Democrat friends think Nan is doing rather poorly. For that matter, even Nan thinks so.
Why did she go there? Do they have a great plastic surgery school??
Something smells fishy about this story.
LLS
I just had a terrifying mental image:
Clinton/Pelosi ‘08
Thank goodness it will never happen.
Meredith was chartered in 1891. Today Meredith is an independent private women's college
My first thought. I last heard that kind of talk about 30 years ago.
A small mind is a terrible thing to waste.
But I’m sure the school is just oh-so-proud of her.
