In reality, Matthews banned Morris NOT because of that remark, I believe, but because everyone knew (in 1997) that Morris by then had 'turned' on Bill Clinton, and that Morris and Hillary hated each other.
Like other "offensive" remarks, the crucified comment was smarmy but not THAT awful.
Morris obviously was trying to say that Gov. Weld was trying to become a martyr for the moderate Republican cause. Weld wanted to be crucified by Jesse Helms.
Language like that is used in every day parlance.
