Pak heading towards chaos: Sharif
Press Trust of India ^ | 11/3/07

Press Trust of India Saturday, November 3, 2007 (New Delhi) Exiled former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday night condemned imposition of emergency in his country and warned that it was heading towards chaos.

Sharif, who is currently in Saudi Arabia, urged all political parties, including rival Benazir Bhutto's Peoples Democratic Party (PPP), to come together to oppose the move.

Strongly condemning President Pervez Musharraf's decision, Sharif said: ''There could be anything, I think we are heading towards chaos. I don't know what is going to happen to our country and for the first time in my political career so upsetting, disappointing and disillusioning.''

''I think this is something very unprecedented in the history of Pakistan,'' he told NDTV.

He alleged that whatever Musharraf was doing was for his own personal benefit and to perpetuate his ''personal rule'' which is using all unconstitutional methods.

Pointing out that the country was in a ''terrible crisis'', the former premier said all the political forces will have to ''put their heads together and save the country.''

When asked whether he thinks about joining Bhutto to fight emergency, he said the situation was grave. ''We have not witnessed such a grave situation in the 60 years of Pakistan's history.''

He said that the western countries, including United States, should take a ''very clear cut'' position on the situation in Pakistan.

Musharraf imposed a state of emergency in the wake of a rapid deterioration in the security situation and growing uncertainty over his position in the face of a legal challenge to his re-election in uniform.

Just what we need: al Qaeda with nuclear weapons and the means to deliver them. Hope those lasers work.

This is shaping up fast to become a 3 way battle for domination of Pakistan.

Musharref/Bhutto/Al Queda

Bhutto reported today that she believes Hamza Bin Laden was behind her assassination attemp.

Is it possible that Al Qaeda, sensing their loss of Iraq, are turning their attention to another weakened state, in another gambit for regional control?

Its possible AQ will try to take advantage of the situation, but this is really about Musharref attempting to fend off Bhutto and the transition of Pakistan to a democracy

Hi. I did the same thing but...they’re many threads on this subject, all going at the same time. Somehow maybe, as one of our FRiends said, we can just make one ‘live’ thread.
Like I said, I started one too when several had started, so I am not picking on you.

That was my thought, too - another constitutional, representative muslim democracy plummeting toward chaos. (end sarcasm)

"I don't know what is going to happen to our country and for the first time in my political career so upsetting, disappointing and disillusioning."

Yeah, me too. Pakistan was always the poster child for rock-solid stability.

Thanks- haven’t been paying a lot of attention to this issue lately. Musharref is threatened by Bhutto’s return and is attempting to retain control by force.
