Do commercial ships carry any weapons?
I believe so.
I took part in a transatlantic race on a fifty-footer and the six of us were armed to the teeth.
Made the Irish Customs people a little nervous since they had grabbed a Boston-based vessel a few years earlier that was loaded with weapons for the IRA (Whitey Bulger helped organize it).

Generally there are handguns aboard, and not many. From what I have heard, the fear of mutiny is weighed against the risk of piracy. No Blackwater guys to guard against this crap.

It probably helped that the owner of the Tramore, an American citizen, was also a citizen of Ireland with the title of Squire.
